Steampunk inspired dinosaurs
« on: November 22, 2011, 07:08:23 PM »
Hi ok first up Hi im new here and its my first post so please be kind.

I love the world of steam punk and of late ive been building a strange army, now im wondering what rules set would allow me to use them !!

The force is an idea of what would happen in the south american forest an unknown tribe of dinosaurs developed intelligence, and created there own steam inspired world of Gold, and strange energies, of the race the most loyal criminal or injured of the race are conscripted into a steam/energy powered cybernetic suit for the rest of their natural life (on the battle field this is not as long as you would think)... they work in small packs, but are often found supported (not by choice) by carrion a vulture like biped species of little intelligence that like to feed upon the injured, attacking any enemy that has suffered casualties in close combat with overwhelming numbers.

ok thats a little back ground ...

obviously i have left gapping holes..

ok here is a pic i took a few days ago ive done more since and these are not finished (sorry)

there pretty big while the carrion are the same height as a man but very weedy.. and have wings...

first up how feasible is it for me to use these with the gaslight or other VSF rules ? im not looking for a killer army im looking for some sort of flavour with gaping holes in its ability for opponents to work out and exploit.

Many thanks

FUBAR/VSF or Gaslight would work well for these, sure.  What are the base models?

Hi and welcome :)

Your background story is very original imo and that's great! I will follow how your project proceeds :).

Cheers guys, was expecting a round of negativity with arms going up saying it wasn't victorian enough :)

I like the idea of them being from the Venusian jungles :) after all there is allot of undiscovered jungle !!!

i will try get some pics asap of them in a better context and il show the origin modle, one the ones pictured there was no conversion done at all ... but i have a few variants with different weapons, im sticking to just one breed of dinosaurs and trying to keep the type of units down to a minimum to show a species that feels it has the ultimate warrior for all occasions in its experience, with a few hole fillers for those unusual times such as bigger and tougher metal machines that need taking down or maybe a fortification that needs to be breached.

having problems seeing how these fit into Gaslight, im not that impressed by the flow of GASLIGHT rules, i designed a game system about 20 years ago that feels more advanced and generic and easy to use,,, now thinking i should drag it out and put it into print !!!

Although designed for large battles you could give When the Navy Walked a whirl. I actually like Buck's Gaslight though because of its customization ability.

To toot my own horn however in WTNW the game uses edges/flaws as a sort of mechanic to give units special qualities. We are about to release Airships and Skypirates but from what you are saying you might want to get the Earthin and Atlantis book that is coming out next Spring 2012! That book will feature rules for dinosaurs and highly evolved technology. From what I have already written I think that you could use the dino rules with the blue energy or chakra technology of the Atlantians or Lemurians to fit what you need.

BTW cheers on your dino army. VSF/Steampunk is supposed to be about whatever you want it to be about. I have heard the 'well this isn't vsf' enough myself from time to time. Fact is VSF and Pulp are close cousins and cross-over is inevitable.

Great work!
Rob

should be hitting this project again soon, have developed the background a little now, and with wild west exodus charlie test rules i think ive found a way to use them... which is good as i now have a bucket load to paint !!

The smaller winged creatures fly and lay spawn in caves or abandoned buildings, and often guard this spawn, the spawn grows and gathers, forming a hard shell.

when the shell breaks open a large bipedal Raptor like beast is hatched, if not fed this will feed on any other eggs around, the smaller beasts guard these and keep the food flowing.

the larger raptors at a later stage lay batches of eggs and many guard these eggs from small predators, often hiding the eggs underground, and watch other them much like the crocodiles of the amazon.

the eggs hatch into the smaller beasts, that forage in and around their parents for any scraps they can get, until they get to suitable size and fly off to to find new homes and lay spawn.

the two species are codependent on each other but is has been known for them to come to blows, A strong gathering will have the 2 living together, protecting and helping each other, and some civilizations have grown from this connection, the intelligence of the larger beasts with the dexterity of the smaller beasts has culminated in a form of technology, the larger beasts are armored up and armed like tanks, while the smaller beasts are lightly equipped with weapons, guns , spears, anything they can make or scavenge, and injured have been known to use vehicles, although they tend to be ripped apart and eaten by their own kind in less civilized cultures..

each species is the parents of the other species... its an eternal wheel.

I have one of those, picked up in Poundland for just such a project and then never used. I'm impressed to see they paint up well!

Don't know why I didn't ask this before, but have you ever seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toys Paleopatrol Dino Runners?

http://www.tmnttoys.com/05vehicles/dinorunners/review.html

Found the triceratops in a thrift store bin; always thought I'd cover the saddle with a howdah, of course.

Never did; keep it at home and occasionally crank it up for a stroll across the floor, to both my and my GF's delight.  :D

Doug

PS Probably never will convert it, too. I keep having this terrible image of it crossing the table under it's own power, crushing the armies of my enemies, and causing the lamentations of their painters...

Great stuff! Kick-ass VSF dinos... Love it!

Looking forward to seeing more. Will we get to see examples of their culture/architecture for example? Do they build vehicles/artillery/war machines?

Very cool.

cheers guys, im trying to avoid putting things like triceratops and such into the force, as after all you dont see every human force using giant monkeys and cows in their army just becuase it was from the same evolutionary period.

latest addition is a big robot dino probably has a crew inside, see how the conversion goes, sorry about no pics and updates, its odd as a photographer my equipment rarely gets used on my own toys, something i maybe should change !!!

news idea although more scifi is these as allies.

from hassle free !!!
