Rackham Capt. Kelian Durak
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:10:35 PM »
A recent mini I finished for a Rackham painting contest. I couldn't get the lights right when taking the photos, so there's some color bleeding of the red cape. It's actually shaded quite a bit more from purple shadows to a deep red in the highlights.

Red is a problem for most cameras. On etrick is just to take the shading further, the other (you guessed it!) is to take the highlights further.

I tend to take both further (it helps the contrast as well any way.

Cool paint job man :)

Lovely red! Which company is it from? Cool mini with a cool paint job.

I'm not one to re-do posts but the prior pics really annoyed me. So I toyed and toyed with re-taking pics of this mini, and the following is the best of the worst. Again, the red appears much too bright than its actual shade in real-life and it's very hard to get a sense of the shading up from purple through deep red and on to bright red throughout the cape itself. This seriously bugs me because, for the first time, I really felt like I've captured a realistic shading of red and my camera....just won't take a clear photo with blowing the luminosity of the red through the roof!

 :o

Looks bloody lovely to me, mate.

I know that you have mentioned the red, which looks great, but those are some damn fine metals too.

I sympathise with the camera issues, mine has a mind of its own too! (At least when I am using it, anyway!)

How is this compared to the actual mini ?
(I tweeked the colour tones to bring out the blue in the shadows and adjusted the light level)

Thanks, the shadows are better but, again, the purple is washed out.

Going to try to take a pic outside in natural light this weekend.

Unless you have your camera correctly set up for the light conditions it still won't matter.
Have you set the white balance?
Have you tried different light level settings?
what do you use as editing software for adjusting light levels and cropping?

These three things are essential (as well as good lighting.)

FINALLY!

Pro-tip: White balance and indirect lighting are your friends. I believe that, with my model of camera, this is about as good as it's going to get and it's about 98% true to life.

Special thanks to generalpoleaxe at Lead Adventure and the Redditors on /r/minipainting for the useful tips!

It is a BEAUTIFULLY DONE piece...& has remained so through all the photos. Does he have a sword-toting flunky?

Thanks all.

In the fluff, he's Captain of the Cadwe Militia, so he's able to carry weapons on his person. Normal citizens are the only ones barred from having weapons "on their person", so they employ flunkies.

God, that reminds me of just how awesome the Cadwallon fluff was... :-*
