Anybody noticed Fire & Sword?
« on: November 29, 2011, 08:17:47 AM »
At Horisont III last weekend, Wolf Terrain presented and sold some new 15 mm Great Northern War miniatures from here: http://www.wargamer.pl/index.php?

There is a nice big hardcover rulebook, which has not yet been translated from Polish (but that should be in progress), and the minis look very nice and come in regiment boxes and company blisters.

Now, I'm definitely NOT going there myself, but given time, money, and other players near me, I could have been tempted.

The minis do not seem to be up on the Wolf website, yet,but they no doubt will be, soon, I guess. North Star should carry them, too.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I have had my eye on this as I'm fascinated by the era. I have too much on the go for now though... :(

Hmm... in some sources, the miniatures are described as renaissance... I'm not sure what is right... first phase of the GNW 1700-1709 might be late renaissance..?

As a medievalist, I see the whole Renaissance paradigm as a marketing scam anyway  lol

I would love to get into that game - Polish would not be a problem for me at least. I think the game will be a smash hit in Poland since the period of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth is incredibly popular, in part thanks to Sienkiewicz trilogy.

The preview pictures of the book looks amazing to me, wonder if they will make an English version, would seem like a LOT of work with the book being 400 pages.

If it's in the Fire & Sword era, it'll be about the Cossack uprising against the Polish Commonwealth. It took place not long after the 30 Years War so it's a fair bit before the Great Northern War.

I think this escalated to involve a fair few nations and many mercenaries went East to sell their swords.

It should include wars with the Swedish, Russians and the Ukrainian cossack uprising. I wonder if the also include stuff before and after, such as various tatar invasions during the end of the 16th century, all the Polish-Swedish wars of Sigusmund Vasa and family, wars against the Ottoman empire, the siege of Vienna 1683 etc.

It could be a great compliment to historical wargaming, putting some more direct focus on the wars in central and eastern Europe.

I'm pretty damn tempted to order the rulebook out of plain curiosity.

edit: I wonder if I could coax my dad into playing this with me,  he always complains everything is in English lol

Just wanted you guys to know that I pulled some strings and received a copy of the HUGE rulebook today along with a pair of sample miniatures. It will take a couple of days to read and digest (and also add some paint to the minis) but I will post a thorough multi part coverage of the rulebook and its contents.

The book I got is about 400 pages thick, hardback and in Polish.

Got an email today from Konrad, one of the two main writers of the rulebook - an English translation is being worked on and planned for release in may!!  ;D

In the meantime I'm compiling a very thorough review of my Polish copy - hopefully you will be as excited as I am.
