Anyone have a source for cheap, 15mm riverboats?
« on: December 04, 2011, 04:09:09 PM »
I am looking for something that I could put a couple of light field guns on and send up the Nile after the Mahdi.  I am really just looking for something inexpensive and moderately close to the right scale.  The boats do not need to come already armed, (I have guns that will look good) and I would be quite happy with the ramshackle look of a civilian craft dragooned into service, that has guns strapped everywhere conceivable.

Please note that a child's toy would even be good, provided it was fairly amenable to conversion.

Thanks

I assume you are not counting the offerings from Old Glory 25s in their shipyard range?  They have 15 mm ships in there, including colonial boats.  I also use a number of their ACW ships for colonial service - and am converting one for use a haunt for riverboat gamblers for the old west.  They have a number of photos at their website.  I find their prices very affordable.

I appreciate the thought, but I couldn't find them on the website.

In any case, I'm one of those wargamers who gets endless joy saying "Hey fellas, look what I created from this fifty cent piece of junk!  It's now a Colonial Sudan period fifty centy piece of junk!"

gloriousbattle, I scratch built my Sudan riverboats using Evergreen plastic and odds-and-ends I found at the swap meet/flea market and on the cheap table at the hobby shop.  I used photos of the Sudan campaigns from my books as my guide.  They're probably not perfect, but they're bad.  You can see them in pics 13, 14, 15, 17, 18 and 19 in my Sudan Gallery at www.warin15mm.com/The-Sudan.html

Very cool!  Probably more work than I will go to, but very nice boat indeed!

glorius,

Just in case you need it, here is the link for Old Glory (again, this is part of Old Glory 25s, not Old Glory 15s) 15 mm boats - they have "oodles" of them.

I like the scratched and cheap stuff, too, but I don't have to time to reinvent every wheel.

Fair enough.
