The rules are nearly finnished.
Chris can tell you more. A few things need to be discussed. We had a huge testgame last weekend. It was a blast. Report will be here soon.

Good news, played a small game last week with two units a side.

One IB and Anarchist for the Republic. One Falange and Carlist for the Nationalists. Used the rules as is except we classed the Carlists as raw but did not apply the -1 morale modifier.

It was a win for the Republic but not for me, hurrah! anyway :)

This seems to be quite a popular period at the moment and quite interesting with all the different troop types involved.  What books would people recommend as a primer for the period?

The Battle for Spain - Anthony Beevor - A fairly balanced view

The Spanish Civil War - Hugh Thomas  - Considered to by some to be the authorative book on the conflict

Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell - Fought in the POUM militia and recorded his experiences in this book.

The Spanish Civil War - Patrick Turnbull - Osprey, with colour plates based off  Uniformes Militares en color de la Guerra Espanol by J.M. Bueno

Also from Osprey - Spanish Foreign Legion - Men at Arms
                           The International Brigades - Elite
                           The Ebro 1938 - Campaign

La Ultima Cruzada: A Wargamers Guide to the SCW - B Cordery - Partizan Press

There are lots more out there, I have not listed all the ones I own even, all have their own bias of course but should help with your understanding, but as Robin Hunt wrote in one of his excellent SCW articles in Military Modelling " to really understand you have to be Spanish"

Another good one is Franz Borkenau´s "Kampfplatz Spanien". The English title (it was originally published in London in 1937) is "The Spanish Cockpit. An Eye-Witness Account of the Political and Social Conflicts of the Spanish Civil War".

Borkenau was a left-wing german journalist who had emigrated in the early 1930s, then went to Spain (at least) twice to report on the war. As the title implies, it´s less on actual battles (although there are some) but rather more focused on the sociocultural aspects. It´s a good read and nowhere as dry as this description might make it sound.

Many thanks for that Phil and Chris, that's really useful.

Do the Osprey books have good coverage of the various uniforms?

Yup, but the Bueno book is probably the bible for uniforms.

i'd really love to build up a militia for scw (CNT or POUM). but i'm still not shure if i should again spent money (an i dont have much of it...) on minis that will just stand here and look nice. i just dont know anyone in berlin who might be interestet in playing scw (or any group thats more in doing historical/pulp stuff than in warhammer and so on...). and i'd really like to do some games (many, if possible) with a force i build.

I understand that Florin. I lived for years in the wargaming wastelands ( not Berlin - speaking in general ) until I discovered my wargaming buddies.
Until I found them I spent time to paint my armies and I never gave up the hope that there must be someone outside ... :)

Hi Jim,

the rules are finnished, just a little bit playtesting left. We also need some pictures and we have to finnish the layout.

The supplement will contain new rules for vehicles,  new actions, new rules in general and the army lists for the SCW with heroes, special units etc.

I think Chris did a great job !

Cheers
