I need a camo pattern
« on: December 07, 2011, 07:47:11 PM »
I need a camo pattern for My Mongrel Mercs to be used in the late 1950-70.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Wouldn't they be a simply green uniform with red berets or something.

Common camo patterns circa 1950-70? Well you could trawl camopedia but I suspect you would find that the most common things readily available to mercenaries and private operators in your time period would be ex WW2 kit or commercial copies or French kit. Think the duckhunter patterns used by the CIA stooges  brigadistas at the Bay of Pigs or the Biafran forces.

British windproof, the sausage skins so beloved of the French paras in Indochina would be another option and would give them a unique look. Denison smocks would be bloody heavy in the tropics. By the 1970s I'd say  some variation on French tenue de leopard AKA lizard pattern would be a likely choice.

I didn't even know there was a camopedia
though the figures are from Mongrel Mercs they are actually going to be Dutch soldiers serving in my mythical East Afrikan country and in My Dutch Indies campaign.
the force will be drawn from all the branches of the Dutch military which explains the small differences in dress.

Dutch troops (Marines) New Guinea (the last portion of the Netherlands East Indies under Dutch control) circa 1960:

http://www.collectie.legermuseum.nl/strategion/strategion/i004640.html

As you can see, either jungle green or duckhunter style camo.

Hope that helps.

In the Congo, Tiger stripes were used, Altho the fotos I have seen are b&w, the colors could be one of three sets:  Nam tigers [predominantly green and black], Portugese African [mainly reddish and some green], or French lizard skins [again mainly red and green].  The pattern is the same for all three.  I prefer the Nam tigers.

Preference is a key thing... there tended to be an element of what was 'fashionable' so as to create the right image. This was combined with what was available or issued too. Besides the genuine ex-soldiers, any mercenary force also had its Walts and Wannabees too, who would try to conform to what they'd seen in Soldier of Fortune.

French camo was popular until the late 60s, then it was 'Tiger Stripe' and so on. Top it off with the beret of whichever elite or SF unit you claimed to have served in and voila!

 :)
