New pics of Dunn's Rangers
« on: December 07, 2011, 08:06:53 PM »
I just had to get the pictures of our rangers painted as Hezekiah Dunn's (New Jersey) Rangers up on the Customers' Gallery page of our website right away. They're from Norman D. Landings a regular over on the WD3 forum, here's one of them:

Another great painting style - "Norman D." gives a brief insight into his technique along with the pictures.  8) There are quite a few different treatments on the Gallery page now, well worth a regular browse.

I'm looking forward to adding some from H. M. Stanley soon too  :D

Very nice Brushwork. :)

I had no idea there were so many ranger companies (Showing my ignorance of the period here ;))

Nice work.

I have some figures that I intend to paint as Gorham's Rangers.

No need to feel abashed there, Major Rogers of His Majesty's Independent Companies did manage to grab all the attention as far as popular culture is concerned, but Gorham's were also paid for from the royal purse (nice choice GordonKhartoum), additionally the various colonies raised their own ranging companies, some more successful than others.

Take a look at the painting guide for rangers on the website - my painting guides are more about providing the information to go ahead and paint them your own way, with a smattering of historical background, rather than the step-by-step painting by numbers variety to reproduce one particular style. I could never suit everyone that way. In fact, the Customers' Gallery page shows a great variety of different styles, all of them inspiring  :)

I must say I really like Norman D. Landings' treatment, and a lot of the other chaps' use of washes, inks, 'army painter' etc. Haven't used those sorts of things for some years now, I may have a go with something similar myself at some point, it might help me get the more 'uniform' units painted more quickly.

Cheers,

Lance

May I ask what company made the two buildings in the last two photos?
Great way to show off some finely painted minis.
Also are the photos taken during a game?

one of them is the Perry Miniatures, North American Farmhouse 1750-1900

Hi Marine0846

I'm pretty sure Commassarmoody is right about the farmhouse, not sure about the log building, I'll ask him next time I'm in touch though - PM me if I forget  :D

I think they were taken during a game, as he mentioned using markers for hidden troops to start with, which can just be seen under the trees.

Cheers,

Lance
