A dragon to match this'n?
« on: December 20, 2011, 04:53:45 PM »
Hello all!
When it comes to dragons in my fantasy world/setting I am EXTREMELY picky.
There are several different types of dragon, but the only truly intelligent ones (the wyrms - as opposed to wyverns, drakes and other things if anyone is interested) need to follow a VERY specific anatomy plan.
They need to be VERY large, VERY long, and extremely skinny with cruel, thin heads and snaggly teeth.
The best example of all of my desired traits is the dragon from an old animated movie called The Page Master.
Here the beast in a few production sketches and some screen captures.

I've looked high and low, but I can't find many figures that match up to it's hoary magnificence.
Anyone here know of something?

The Reaper Pathfinder could be an option!

Maybe not as big as you're seeking! If you want big (but also expensive) there is the Heresy dragon

Then again if you want big, skinny and very expensive!

The Heroscape dragon Mimring seems to match that pretty well:

Since it comes with the original master set (of which many players bought multiples for the terrain) and since you can only use one Mimring in the game, there are a lot of "orphaned" Mimring figures and they go for very cheap on ebay.

Shame on me! I had the original Heroscape box when it first came out and destroyed most of the figures for some stupid project I can't remember because I wanted their bases!  >:(
I didn't like Mimring then and I don't like him now. Then he was clunky and ugly and smelled like blood (it was the copper paint) and now he looks like the GW dragons that I dislike for their goofiness and ugly posture.
And yet... with his neck being repositioned, his wings being grafted off of his shoulders and onto his back and some frills at the base of his neck... and his tongue cut short and forked...
He's pretty much the Page Master dragon in material form.
I'll take it! :D

Would very much like to see more dragons like this though, since the wyrms are a race and I need more than one model for diversity in encounters.
Mostly good suggestions so far, keep them coming!
(love that lawn statue!)

Have a few to shift, I'll take a look at the herd and come back to you with potentials. Looks like a Don Bluth animation?

I could think of two models which seem to me to fit the bill:

Ral Partha Riding The Cold Wind To Valhalla:

Painted by "Brushguy"
Picture taken from: http://www.theminiaturegallery.de/dragons/coldwindmain.html
CMON link: http://www.coolminiornot.com/20533

Grenadier (Mirliton) Teronus The Ultimate Dragon:

Painted by "misterjustin"

Both should still be available 8)
Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind
Let me see the banners fly
Before the storm begins

And what about Nidhogg, from the same series as riding the cold wind? That was actually the first model I had to think of. The Mc Farlane dragons are very good as well. I have quite a set and should really try to repaint one once.
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

How about this one?

He's from Safari Ltd.  Available for cheap on Amazon.  I have a couple of their dragons and they are great/cheap gaming alternatives.  Slap'em on a base and they work great.   The sculpts are surprisingly detailed and the plastic is probably slightly "harder" than the Heroscape stuff.  Very little work to get what you want. And all between $10-15 US
SOme of their others for consideration:

This is my boomstick!

If you can find this model, he may do the trick.

1988 Citadel Lava Dragon

I found mine on e-bay and converted him as a Dark elf Black dragon adding the dreadlord.

Your discription seems to match him and he is suitable for 28mm

No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.
