The Whisperer in Darkness from The HPLHS.
« on: December 23, 2011, 09:59:56 PM »
I just got my copy of this yesterday and spent the evening devouring it and the collection of behind the scenes and making of featurettes. I know that there were some LAFers who didn't care for it but I feel that it's a fun and well made independent film that expands on Lovecraft's story in a respectful and enjoyable way. And considering how molested the source material would have been if Whisperer had been made by a normal studio I'm glad that I've gotten to see The HPLHS version.

The film itself moves along well and is interesting and engaging. And the making of featurettes are informative and almost serve as a class on low budget film making effects. Considering the budget that they were working with The HPLHS have put together a really good looking film.

I recommend this DVD highly.

Just got mine as well, and second the endorsement of the amazing work HPLHS does on a shoestring.  Their Call of Cthulhu was super as well.  Hard to go back and look at the typical homogenized Hollywood product after enjoying such fine indie work.

My two copies arrived today! I'll be watching it tonight, after the kids are asleep.

Horray!

I really enjoyed it. The mi-go special effects were great. Some pulp adventure aspects for sure, but that didn't ruin it for me.

Watched it at my buddy Jason Voss' apartment last week.  Jason did some miniature work for the film, and got an early comp copy.  I enjoyed it.  Thrilled when the little girl exited the scene, and the ending is amazingly cool and Lovecraftian.

I wasn't very happy with that as a matter of fact. I would've liked more Akeley at the begining of the film instead, now the build-up seemed truncated. It wasn't a bad film but unlike the film makers, I think it would've worked even without the plastered-on pulp action third act.

Here's an explanation how to unlock the easter eggs on the DVD's:

Quote from: Blackburn on YSDC
Start up the feature disk and let it get to the main menu. You'll see the three options and Play should be selected.

Press up.

None of the three options should be selected anymore. Then, with nothing selected, press the select button.

This process will bring up the Nyarlathotep short on the feature, and the predicted invasions of Old Ones on the mountain on the Bonus Disk.

I did it in small font for people who don't want to get the spoiler.
