Defign "PULP" for me

I was thinking Indiana Jones mostly, but I suppose "Pulp" would actually include anything in the PULPS magazines of the early to mid 1900s

YES?

Indeed!

The intro page to .45 Adventure has good introduction to what is Pulp. Also you can look in Saint Wiki

Please also search the message boards over at TMP - this falls under the category of Frequently Argued Question.

I don't mean to sound dismissive, but this discussion has a bad history of getting down people's craws the wrong way.

Do you mean this one above, the one on the miniatures page or discussions on pulp in general? :?:

The ones on TMP have devolved, and there was a long argument in the HLSS Yahoo group. Discussions on pulp are generally less acrimonious than discussions that try to define it.

Weird really, arguing over something that doesn't actually exist. :?

As Pete said, though, defining it can prove difficult. So, instead I will choose to define "pulp gaming."

Pulp gaming is about characters. Even in a miniatures game, there should be some RPG elements in it. In Pulp Gaming, the main characters can be beaten but never die until the final scene. Your heroes should be able to do amazing things, but those things should not be quite SUPER heroic. Your villains will devise all kinds of nasty, but completely unreliable, methods to kill the heroes. If the game feels like you could have read about it in one of the lurid magazines of the 20s through the 40s, then you could probably be quite safe in calling it a pulp-style game.

It usually turns ugly on TMP because of me getting angry at wargamers' insistence that it means "Adventure in far-flung places in a 1930s setting." Yes, Pulp can be that. But that isn't all that it is.

It's my fault. There's one going on right now over there that I couldn't help getting argumentative on. I try not to, but I just can't help it.

Imbeciles! They're all imbeciles!

Edit: Oh dear, I just read Prof's definition on this board. I'll be quiet.

And the cheap paperbacks from the mid-1900s onwards, too, I would say. Those piles and piles of rubbish-looking Westerns and tacky, lurid romance novels that clog up the second-hand bookshops around here are to me the epitome of Pulp. But I reckon folks on TMP would think me mad if I tried to include Westerns or Romance in their precious Pulp genre.

I may still do a pulp romance miniatures game just for kicks.  :D
