Ghostfront : Devil's Abbey - AAR
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:10:18 PM »
Playing a campaign actually for SotR called Ghostfront. This is the third episode. The first 2 can be found here:

The Devil's abbey is a cursed place. Situated on the north of Honsfeld, the construction has never been completed over the centuries. Generations of monks tried to finish it but were constantly harassed by diseases, plagues, accidents, murders, etc... By the end of the 19th century, the place was abounded, a timeless ruin cursed by the devil himself.
When the occult branche of the SWD discovers a high level of electromagnetic energies emanating from the place, they attempt a mission to retrieve these powerfull energies in a machine called the "Heller device" (named after its inventor doktor Heller). And this in the midst of the Ardennes offensive.

In this scenario the German player has to store "occult energy" points (OC pts.) in the Heller device and does so with the help of a scientist. Once the machine stores 10 OC pts. the German wins. The US player has to kill or capture the scientist to stop this experiment.

The Heller Device

In contact of the machine, the scientist can try in its activation to store from 1 to 3 pts. In the process, the device can overload. The more points the german player goes for, the more riskier it willl be.
- Storing 1 pt. : Roll a D6, on a roll of 1 the german player has 1 pt. of overload (OVL). On 2 or more, he has 1 OC pt.
- Storing 2 pts. : D6 : 1: +2 OVL pts.
                               2: +1 OVL pt.
                               3: +1pt each
                               4: +1 OC pt
                               5+: +2 OC pts.
- Storing 3 pts. : D6 : 1: +3 OVL pts.
                               2: +2 OVL pts.
                               3-4: +1pt each
                               5: +2 OC pts. +1 OVL pt.
                               6: +3 OC pts. +1 OVL pt.
If the scientist should be down/goner, then the machine continues by itself decreasing by 1pt. a turn. Every shot towards the scientist that scores a 1, hits the device causing it +1 OVL pt.

As soon as the device receives a certain amount of OVL pts., certain things start to appear in its vicinity (3d6" from the device in a random direction).
OVL : 1pt : 1 lesser demon appears
         3pts : 2  lesser demon appear
5pts : The closest unit to the point of impact suffers 1d6 Light HE hits.
7pts : A portal (3" template) appears and moves 2d6" in a random direction every turn. Every model on the template or in its path are removed as casualties. Disappears on  a roll of 1 at start of turn.
         9pts : A greater demon appears
10pts : A demonic portal is opened, connected with another world. This is a major defeat for both sides.

OoB:
US recon platoon : 1 command squad, 2 AI squads, 2x3 Robotroopers
SWD : 1 scientific command squad, 1 mechgren. squad, 1 aufkl. squad, 1 rohlingsoldat, 1 vampire

The German player deploys first in the abbey. The US player deploys at 10" of his table edge or can directly enter his troops via his sides (24"). The game lasts for 6 turns. The SWD starts with 2 OC pts.

The deployment on the German side

The bulk of the US force engages towards the abbey. Both machine guns providing covering fire directed towards the tower.

Dr Heller makes haste with its experiment. Driving the machine to a higher level (5 OC pts. -  1 OVL pt.)

On the other side of the abbey, fire fights occur. A first demon will appear in between and will be rapidly conjured.

The advance towards the ruins proves to be more difficult than expected

Constantly harassed by MG fire, the aufkl. squad was pinned inside the tower

Finally, the AI boys are getting closer to their objective

More demons appear, while Dr. Heller manipulates his machine ( 7 OC - 4 OVL)

The scientist can just handle his device before taking a shot from the robotroopers ( 9 OC - 5 OVL) In the same time burst of energy appeared and stroke the vampire, killing her in the process

With Dr. Heller down, his device cruised further to get that last OC pt. ensuring a German victory.

Fantastic looking terrain and minis. Is there any chance of getting some close ups of the two forces?
By the way, the other two links seem to be broken :(

Love the abbey!  You must have had the patience of Job to paint all those stones different colours, but it really works.

Great, very atmospheric  layout. The Abbey is beautiful. Is it scratch built?

Thanks for posting.

Great report and great looking forces and terrian too. Nice reports for your previous games too.

Please don't do any more reports like this, as it might inspire me to go back to my WWW2 Soviets before completeing my current painting projects!

Sorry for the pics, can't really do much better actually with the poor light. Also, I'll have to invest in a new camera, that can pick up details much better than this.

Strange, just checked it and it seems to work (?). Otherwise, you can check the SotR forum, on the battle repports page.

It's a WiP I'm working on for the upcoming set at CT-Scenery. It will be slightly different though. This one's a conversion. :)

Great scenario. All of your battle reports are really amazing; since the firsts (maybe "the thing that should not be"?) in the SOTR forum. Congratulations for these miniatures, the game board and the history background.

I am not a WWWII fan, but I have to say that the terrain and figures are excellent. You have achieved that winter look perfectly. I really loved the b/w drawn vignette you did as well. Congrats, really top stuff.
