Barrow Scratch-build
« on: January 03, 2012, 04:48:06 PM »
I finished this project shortly before Christmas, but have only had the chance to photograph it today.  It's constructed primarily from a plastic takeaway tub, ready-mixed filler, stones of varying sizes, cat litter and sand and was built on a whim.  As usual there are a few things I'm not happy with (including the photographs!  I need another daylight bulb...), but I'm on the whole fairly pleased with how it turned out.  Your own thoughts and criticisms would of course be much appreciated.

Nice work!
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

You're building up quite an impressive collection there! The whole scene looks really natural and coheisive, using my favourite minis helps.....

Also I'd like to see those bushes closer (grass is nice too). Rubberised horsehair with leaf scatter?

Splendid job there, Funghy! If you give Andrew a close-up of the bush, I'd like to see the behind please. ;D

VERY NICELY DONE! Your Barrow has a lot of character & narrative possibilities which make it so much more than just a cool piece of scenery....right now it looks like the Trolls are doing a bit of house cleaning.

Thanks for all the positive comments.

That looks really cool, what was the grass made from?

The grass is from a Silflor/MiniNatur Winter Pasture mat, which I bought from here (scroll down a bit).  I picked up the 6"x4" section as a tester and still have half left after 'flocking' the burial mound.  It's expensive, but looks the business.  I should imagine that the 19.5" x 12.5" piece would last you for some time if you're sparing with it.

Also I'd like to see those bushes closer (grass is nice too). Rubberised horsehair with leaf scatter?

The bushes are indeed rubberised horsehair covered with leaf scatter.  A gold star to you, sir!  I roughly paint the horsehair dark brown, glue it to a pre-painted base, then splodge neat PVA all over it before shaking on the leaf scatter.  When dry I hit it with a gloss then matt varnish to improve durability.  That's it!

If you give Andrew a close-up of the bush, I'd like to see the behind please. ;D

No close-ups of the bushy mound for you, young Matti!  This is, after all, a family-friendly forum.

Well, those skulls couldn't have got up and walked out themselves!

Good looking barrow - a fine place to rest.
