Just out of curiosity

When reading through a thread some people's signatures aren't there and yet in the same thread they sometimes are 

I don't know whether it has to do with mobile devices or not (I use a pad a fair bit) or whether it's just a random occurrence.

Answers will be stored away in that little corner of my brain where all the shit goes (the rest is just empty  ).

The signature appears on your first post on any given page of a thread. If you post a second time and it is on the same page, there will be no sig.

I think the feature is designed to prevent the annoyance of having to look at the same idiotic massive signature picture over and over on the same page. You get that on some forums. It can get a bit much. It's even worse on forums that allow animated signatures.
