Here some 15mm grumpy's miniature portuguese for the XVIè century.

The ordonance solider (pikemen)

The Albuquerque's slave comes from ESSEX miniatures and his umbrella is a lens

Now, the degredados (portugese prisonier get out prison for serving on ship)

The miniatures comes from Grump's too, but from the pirates range.

And all this good guy's come to meet some caffre/neger (from ESSEX)

Hope you love them ;)

Stéphane

Beautiful!   I particularly like the degredados serving as the Forlorn Hope. Excellent painting on tiny men!

Excellent, especially so for being 15mm :)

And, er..., it´s Portuguese.

Sorry to nitpick :)

Speaking of Portuguese, do you have any information on flags from that period? or about flags for the early 1700's???

A wealth of information here:
http://www.therightresort.com/travel%20guides/portugal/flag.htm

According to the site, the correct flags for that period would be:

From 1667 to 1707 (National arms on a white field):

1707 to 1816 (Slight change in the National arms):

This is not intended to be from a "concerned member of the forum", it is just something I am curious about:

Is "caffre/kaffer" and "neger" OK nomenclature these days? In this forum it is used in a historical context but I notice people are careful anyway.

Looking up "kaffer" on wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaffer it think I answered my own question regarding that word.

In Sweden it is OK to say "neger" since it defines the more dominant trait a person may carry out of three human sub races (the others being caucasian and mongoloid (not to be confused with Downs Syndrome).

In fact, here there is three kind of people:

Some are xenophobic and hate none whte people and use caffre or neger like a dirty word. Like their grand-father in the colonial area.

Some other doesn't use these word because they remerbering colonial contexte and have a problem with her conscience/mind.

Some other, the last category, use this name because they are part or own culture. In the mind of this category there is no dirty sens, just a word to qualify men in a historical contexte. You put me in this last category ;)

Stéphane

EDIT: but it is a south-western french's point of view. I'm appologise if some people are not happy with these words. It's juste a "translation" about terms I'm use here ;)

I think these are historical terms for the period and if a set of rules were written you would likely use them.

I am gaming Portuguese in Barazil and the Natives of Portuguese Father and Tupi mother are called Mamelucos because they looked like Egyptian Mamelukes.

I would also say that as an English speaker the Kaffre and Neger spellings wouldnt be assoiciated by us as the racist spellings we are aware of
