Not sure about your part of California, but I find thrift stores and garage/yard/boot sales a much better venue, if you keep at it. A) Plenty of items going back to now-out-of-production, B) a lot fewer empty calories, unless there's a kid in front selling homemade baked goods. 

And don't be afraid to stir up the Free box!

I've tried some Dollar Stores in the past but haven't really had any luck.

We do get garage sales in and around the neighborhood from time to time.
