Some ACW action, a small battle.
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:48:05 PM »
I recently had a tryout of some rules for the ACW. A small action for this purpose, one infantry brigade, some cavalry and an Artillery battery per side. The Confederates placed their battery on a dominating hill, placing one infantry regiment on their right flank, one in reserve and two regiments on the left supported by a regiment of cavalry. The Union force launched a full infantry brigade at the hill, and teased the Reb right flank with some skirmishers and a rifled artillery battery, whilst their cavalry loitered on the Reb left flank. The two cavalry forces then charged each other and spent the remainder of the game locked in combat until the greater numbers of the Union prevailed. The right flank saw little action other than some desultory shelling on the Reb regiment. In the centre the Confederate battery inflicted severe damage on the Union infantry, although they pressed on to come to grips with the waiting Rebs. The battle ended with a Confederate infantry regiment about to attack the Union rear, and the Union brigade locked in a melee to its front. Honours were about even. Pictures in part two.

The rules, a home grown set slightly "Old School" in flavour worked very well with a couple of minor wrinkles which were quickly ironed out. The figures are by me and are by Foundry, Perry, Redoubt, Dixon and First Corps.

Thanks for reading this.

Very impressive.  I like it.  I also thought "what a lovely game room".  All that natural light!

Thanks chaps, I wish I could claim the gaming room and many of it's contents as my own, but it belongs to my good friend John Ray. On the shelves can be seen elements of his extensive AWI and eighteenth century collection, and all figures and I mean all of them, in those collections were designed and made by him as well. I have been busily building up my ACW armies to a point when I could get them onto his fantastic terrain boards, so that is my first wargaming accomplishment so far this year.
