Suggestions for cool flying boat?
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:38:54 AM »
I need suggestions for a 1/48 plastic kit of a snazzy looking sea plane, Interwar type, production year no later than 1938. Preferably of British make but other countries would be acceptable. Civilian or military. I was looking at the Supermarine Sea Otter but it turns out it was not manufactured until well into 1942.

That's early-mid 30s, I think.

They also do the float plane version of the Fairey Swordfish, if you'd rather a seaplane than a flying boat...

You could go with the following if there is a model avaiable:
flying Boats:
Short Empire
Supermarine Southampton
Boeing 314 Clipper
Dornier Do J
Martin M-130

I have the SMER one, I got cheap off ebay last year. Nice kit that I got for pulp games.
I still intend to build it one day but the thing that put me off was what colours to paint it.
I though of silver but though it would be to boring. Any good ideas what colour a civilian one would be?

You might want to try a die-cast Keystone-Loening K-84 Amphibian. You can usually find them on ebay (look under airplane banks).

Here is a link about the plane showing the bank.

I have one of these but I have hesitated painting it.

Of course, the coolest of all time is the Red Pig's SM21

Porco Rosso's SM21
