The Shining Force project
« on: February 19, 2012, 08:41:44 PM »
Hi everyone !

This is my first post here. My name is David, and I've been painting and playing with miniatures for 20 years (which is probably less than most of you ;) ).

I've been lurking these forums for a few years too, and I really appreciate what I'm seeing most of the time. But this time I've decided to register and start participating.

Why ? Because I need your help !

My younger brother is a long time fan of Shining Force, a 1992 turn based fantasy strategy game for the Genesis/Megadrive console.
I would like to find and paint miniatures that look like the main characters of the game, and then give the whole to my brother for his birthday.

My painting skills are decent, but my modding/sculpting skills are close to zero. So I need to find miniatures as close as possible to the original characters. That's why I need your help (my knowledge of fantasy miniatures is a bit outdated).

The characters whose lookalikes I'd like to find are :

Max the main character

Luke, a beardless dwarf

Ken, an armored and spear wielding centaur

Tao, an elf wizard

Hans, an elf archer

Lowe, a halfling priest

Gong, a monk fighting bare hands

Balbaroy, a Hawk-man

Zylo, a wolfman with steel claws

Bleu, a young dragon

Musashi, a samurai

Hanzou, a ninja

Adam, a robot

And now the tricky characters :

Jogurt, a giant hamster with a helmet (!!)

Kokichi, an old man with a flying apparatus

Guntz, an armored armadillo-man (!!)

And last but not least, Domingo the ball-of-fur-under-a-bucket (!!!!)

Off course If I manage to find and paint the miniatures, I'll post the pictures here ;)

Thanks in advance for you help !

Dixons have this chap and loads of Ninja.  Cut and stick a new set of legs, horse is separate.

I'll try to help if I can, but I can't think of anything at the moment.
This is going to be a really cool project to follow, good luck!

Maybe this for the Balbaboy Hawkboy?

Could do with some sculpted armour though!

You might find Super Dungeon Explore from Soda Pop Miniatures up your alley:

You might find some (non "manga) look alikes for the first ones from Red Box Games?

The centaur's an easy conversion if you fund a good knight to chop.

Also try reaper minis. They have a cool figure finder online.
Good luck!

Cool! I hope you take off on this... along with Fire Emblem, Shining Force is among my favourite games. I love turn based tactical RPGs!

I agree Shining Force was an AMAZING game, I can hear the music for it now. I would be very interested to see what you find, please keep up with the posts on where it takes you!

I was a big Shining Force fan myself (also Phantasy Star IV). I see to recall playing it for something like 72 hours straight...  o_o

You might find this fellow a useful basis for a Kokichi conversion:

Thanks to all of you for your advice and answers !

Heldrak, nice idea for a Kokichi conversion. And as an old time Heroclix player, I already own this miniature ;)

I guess I'll have to hone my sculpting skills to achieve the project, and it'll probably be longer than I expected.

I can't promise I'll finish or even really start the project, but I'll try if I can find at least a couple of promising minis.
Stay tuned !
