Victorian City terrain, advice needed.
« on: February 20, 2012, 02:17:59 PM »
Hi LAFfers

My first planned project for this year has been to build up a decent sized city terrain, initially for VSF gaming, but with the option of adding later buildings and detail to it to bring it into the 20th century (for Pulp and Zombie gaming).  I'm cheating a bit and mainly using every suitable commercially available building I can get my hands on, as my scratchbuilding skills are workmanlike at best.

But so far, so good.

I have a question for anyone who's used wallpaper as cobblestones like I have.  I'm finding it very vulnerable to scuffing, as the base boards are stacked together or as buildings are placed on the road surface.  Did you apply anything else to your road surface to protect it?  Like varnish or special paint?

With regard to wallpaper cobbles, I give them a coat of ,Hairspray' to protect them. Any rips that do occur thru transport etc can add to the look of the streets if you repair them with a fine coral sand etc

really nice... only criticism is that Victorians would have had solid wooden doors, not big glass paned jobs...

I think its from ramshackle games

It is indeed Ramshackle games, a modification of their Brass Coffin using parts from their Tridlins catalog (Liger turret, HST smokestack & an extra set of big wheels)  Based, I hasten to add, on an original conversion by LAF's very own Papa Midnight (bows to the master).

Good point well made.  Some card backing and repaints to turn them into solid panelled doors is called for I think.

I use the wallpaper cobblestones for my streets. I mount mine on cork and as with Shaun give them a light dusting of varnish. Unfortunately there's is no avoiding damage, especially when there's a Mr Clumsy at the table so before each game I give them a quick touch up where the damage is. As they are so cheap and easy to put together every now and again I replace entire road sections.

The buildings look good. I was thinking of using similar with a few adjustments such as sticking roofs on them with dormer windows.
Don't!

Fenris games do a nice selection of resin dormer windows. If you haven't I'd check out Pappa Midnight's victorian buidlings, scratch built, totally inspiring.

Buildings you have look very appropriate, nice open london scene, rife for revenants! ;)

I was just thinking, you could always fix a layer of felt to the underside of your buildings.  This should reduce the scuffing.

Jimbibbly has some Victorian buildings and Warbases have some terraced houses, tenements and workshops.

I think for buildings it might be relatively easy to put some velvet under them ... similar to many chess-board-figures on marble. Additionally the often do not slip around so much anymore, when touching them accidentally.

Maybe some cellular rubber or foam rubber ("Moosgummi" in German) might do the trick, too?
