Thoughts on size (with Colonial Marines)
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:01:33 PM »
Couldn't find a "generic wargames discussion" forum here on LAF, so I'll just post this here. Do move the topic if there's a more suitable one. Below is some of my musing on the subject of using different sized miniatures from various ranges together. Figured it might be of interest, and I'd like to hear your opinions on the subject.

Basically, I'm all for combining different ranges. From a gamer's physical POV the differences tend to disappear.

I couldn't agree more with your observation and have a number of units in my collection that are hodge-podged together from different manufacturers. With clever brushwork, the differences in uniform, armor, and equipment styles can be minimized, and often it adds some interesting (and needed) visual variety.

It was both of your threads (although I think Hrothgar posted his GZG/Denizen minis on TMP) that made me reconsider the use of different scales on the tabletop. Until some time ago I didn't mix scales/sizes and I used the "dreaded" side by side comparision to rule out the minis that didn't fit the ones I had. That all changed after reading your posts.

If the style of the miniatures is the same - weapons, equipment - a similar paintjob does the trick. After all, it's very rare to see an army/unit where all the soldiers are exactly the same size.

If I was going for a properly uniformed army (like Space Marines...only as an example), I would stick to whichever miniatures were available that fitted the uniform...so they would probably be from the same manufacturer.

If I was going for a non-uniform army, I would select troops from wherever as long as they fitted the theme and worked well together... size/equipment wouldn't be an issue but if the styles were markedly different (and quality, for that matter), then that would play a part in the selection process.

I quite often use miniatures/vehicles from a range of manufacturers and if I think they fit together as a group, I'll use them... but I am only a collector and not a gamer.

Great post, and it really goes to show how slight variations of scale are not as important as we may think.
