Midnight's Zombie Game Battle Report 3
« on: January 06, 2008, 05:30:34 PM »
The following is a quick battle report play-testing my own Zombie rules. Rather than the normal “get to the objective” type scenario I decided to try out an “Escort” scenario, where the Characters have to safely escort a group of survivors through a Zombie infested town. My ever suffering mate Fritzy volunteered to give it a bash whilst I made notes and took some pics.

The Objective: A group of four survivors is trapped inside a Church (where they thought it would be safe to hide!) situated at one end of town. Cardinal Brunswick, along with two fellow priests must safely escort the survivors out of the town. The town is pretty well over-run with Zombies and most of the area has been pretty much looted of useful gear (NO GEAR PICK-UPS!!!)
The objective is to save all of the survivors!

The Characters: Cardinal Brunswick belongs to a secret order of Priests who “Trouble Shoot” for the Vatican. They work in “Sleeper Cells” ready to be activated in times of crisis. Brunswick is armed with a heavy pistol and his trusty Bible. Accompanying Brunswick is Father Micalef armed with an SMG and a knife and Brother Samson armed with a pump-action shotgun and a knife.
The “Survivors” are a bit of a sorry bunch. They consist of a news crew (Camera Man and Anchor Woman), an elderly stockbroker and his teenage nephew. None of the Survivors are armed and they have pretty poor stats. They will not intentionally engage Zombies in combat but will defend themselves.

Special Rules: The Survivors can only be controlled by the player if they are within 6” of one of their Characters. If are out of range they will run in the opposite direction of the closest visible Zombie. If there are no Zombies in sight they will move as per the Zombie movement rules (fear has some strange effects!). If they come into contact with any Zombies they stop immediately. A Survivor which find themselves in combat with a Zombie(s) must make a Nerve Roll otherwise they attempt to run away leaving themselves open to attack. If they make the roll, they attack and defend as “Unarmed”.

Table set-up: The game was set up on my trusty 5’ X 3’ dining table with plenty of scenery for blocking LOS.
Spawn Points: Four Spawn Points were placed on the table. The Palace Theatre, The Motorcycle Repair Yard, The Hospital and a wrecked School Bus.

Initial Zombie Numbers: A total of 19 Zombies were initially spawned and shared between the Spawn Points.

TURN 1:
Fritzy decided that this wasn’t going to be a slaughter-fest right from the start. With the number of Spawn Points and Characters on the table, firing lots of guns could make things VERY busy (Spawn Points are more likely to produce Zombies with gunfire close by). He moved the group cautiously up the Main Street away from the Church.

Despite his caution, the Hospital spawned 3 Zombies and the Bike Shop spawned 6. Due to a really bad roll, the Theatre spawned 7 Zombies and a “Special” in the form of a FRESH MEAT Zombie!!! This guy is more intelligent, can use weapons and can communicate with other Zombies to attract their attention!!!!

At the end of Turn 1 there were 34 Zombies on the table and 1 Special!!!!

TURN 2:
Still trying to be cautious, Fritzy moved his group at the run towards Ramones Nightclub, trying to break line of sight with the Zombies.

The Zombies at the Bike Shop caught sight of the group and started to pursue them. Although some of the Zombies at the Theatre were out of range, the Fresh Meat Zombie “Brought his Friends” and the whole horde started moving towards the group.
Fritzy was more than a little worried when the Fresh Meat Zombie took a shot at Brother Samson with its’ light pistol ( Yup…..the old rot was armed!). It scored a hit but only managed to put a hole in the Priest’s coat!
The Zombies at the Hospital start to move in and the ones at the School Bus moved 6” down the table.

Rolling for Spawning, the Bike Shop spawned another 4 Zombies (attracted possibly by the gunfire).

TURN 3:

Fritzy ran the group around the side of Ramones, trying to break line of sight, with Brother Micalef holding back slightly to defend the rear.

Zombies at the Hospital continue moving towards the group, whilst a partial detection at the Theatre means that four break way from that horde, including Fresh Meat ( he can’t “Bring his Friends” this time because it wasn’t him that spotted the Survivors). The only other movement for the Zombies is near the Bus, where they shuffle 3”.
Another 4 Zombies are spawned at the Hospital.

TURN 4:
The group ran past Ramones trying to break into open ground, with Brother Micalef still holding back to guard the rear.

The Zombies started to converge on Brother Micalef, almost reaching him in close combat! The Fresh Meat Zombie shot at Brother Samson an missed.

No Spawns this turn.

TURN 5:

Fritzy decided that it was time for some gun-play! Brunswick and Samson moved up the table with the Survivors, with Samson holding his action at the end of his move.
Father Micalef brought his SMG up and “Burnt The Clip” on the Horde which was almost on top of him. He tore four of the Rots to pieces in a hail of hot lead, knocking another two to the ground!!! With that, he moved up the table towards the rest of the group.

Auto Fire...... You Gotta Love it!!!

The Zombies at the Theatre, hearing the noise, moved down the alley towards the group.
The Fresh Meat Zombie took another shot at Samson, missing again!
The Zombies at the Bike Shop moved towards the Church (they must have finally realised there was someone there….)

Brother Samson used his held action to blow the Fresh Meat Zombie into a rotten mist with his shotgun!

The Theatre spawned another 4 Zombies.

TURN 6:

The group moved up the table towards their escape. Brother Micalef reloaded his SMG and Brother Samson held another action.

Some of the Zombies at the Theatre started to follow the group. A Horde of 5 more moved past Ramones.
Finally, the Zombies at the Bus start to move towards the Survivors (better late than never!)

Samson used his held action to fire at the closest Zombie and missed. He used a re-roll and still missed!!!!!

Strangely enough, another 5 Zombies were spawned at the Bike Shop, including a Zombie Dog!

TURN 7:

The group ran off the table, suffering no casualties (except Samson’s damaged coat!)
SUCCESS!!!

Safe and sound....... A Survivor loses control of his bladder.......

This is the second time we’ve played this scenario. The last time was with only 2 Survivors but the Characters had to get to them first and then get them to safety. That was a little more bloody (1 Character Dead, 1 Wounded and 17 Zombies put to rest!)

Hope you liked the report.

Nice report and brilliant pictures!

Do you use your own rules or an existing set?

I really, really like your table too. Worldworks roads I recognise, but where are the plastic buildings from?

Ditto - lovely models too. Fun report. Brother Micalef has for some reason a Maltese surname (well, almost - it's Micallef).

Absolutely Phantastik!!!!

Are you going to publish your rules, or perhaps sell them as pdf or something?

Are the plastic buildings just a bunch of random toy-houses, or are they from a particular manufacturer?

Love your use of the 'link-in' Streets of Mayhem. Am going to too.

Also love your use of the Dinky '59 Coupe de Ville (did you snatch the 4-cars-pieces bunch away in front of me before x-mas?   ) - I've got me two of those + a '57 Chevy hardtop for a planned Elvis-zombie-hunter-gang, and a '57 Chevy Nomad for the roadie....

And I absolutely adore that limo!!!  :o  8)  Must get me some wheels in that weight class!!
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Thanks for the comments! :)

The rules are about 75% completed and will be released initially as a .pdf and depending upon response I will be looking into printing.

The plastic buildings are combination of Walthers and Bachmann rail buildings and Ramones is a Disney toy.

I knew "Micallef" was a Maltese name but didn't realise it had two"L's". Thanks for the info!

Thanks again for the comments.

I got a Lincoln Stretch Limo from here:
http://www.amazonminiatures.com/catalogue/index.asp?rName=Guns%20And%20Girls

It is marked as 1:38 but looks ok with Copplestone etc. It could be the same general model as Pappa's.

I'd be interested in the rules....

I thought I recognised "Ramones" - it's from "Cars" [my son is a Cars nut]. Now, if I can only think of a way of persuading him to let me have it.....

Nice battle report PM. It always amazes me seeing all the various zombie miniatures you have (and have created). Plus it is fun looking through all the pictures and looking at stuff in the background like the Tardis.

One questions I do have, what manufacturer is this dog figure from? I take it you aded the zombification.

Thanks

Excellent stuff again Pappa. The rules look like they are coming together well. Great scenery and a superb collection you have built.  :D
Well spotted Audrey. I hadn't noticed the Tardis :)

Thanks LTD. Looking at the Ral Partha and Obelisk miniatures I think it is the Ral Partha, as the dog's front leg is turned in which the obelisk one does not.

Thats what I thought but the Obelisk one could be used too  I dont think PM would mind me saying but the idea came form the Daead Walk again. I have 4, two of the dogs are doermans whilst the other two are supposed to be German Shepherds, however if you dock the tails they look very similar to the dobermans and not really like Alsations.

Thank you all for the comments!

Audrey: LTD was spot on with the dog being Ral Partha and the fact I blagged the idea from the Dead Walk ( cheers for that!). A quick going over with a scalpel, a pin drill and some green stuff and they make pretty cool Zombie Dogs!)
Well spotted! Did you notice the Predator and Pale Rider minis?
