How I killed Batman...An acetone horror story.
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:08:01 AM »
If only I'd bothered to read further into some of the threads here.

I remembered reading that Acetone will strip off those HeroClix super-thick paint jobs.

I was very impressed initially.  As soon as I dropped the Caped Crusader into the dip, I could see little sheets of that horrible blue paint fading away.

Then, we decided to go out for lunch, and I left Batman to his own devices.

I came home to find a cloudy blue mixture.  I plunged in to find that not only had the paint all but disappeared, but his cape was badly mangled, and poor Batman was now a spongy mess.  I dumped out the nasty acetone, and rinsed the Heroclix, only to realize one of his hands was now missing as well (most likely in the disposed acetone)

So, I in my ignorant haste have done what countless supervillians have failed to do.

The horrifying results:

Yeah...acetone likes to eat plastic...bummer eh?

I agree that it does open up some interesting modeling possibilities.

At least it was only one figure,

I was thinking the same thing!

I think it will look pretty cool painted.

Any pre-painted models I've re-painted so far have turned out "okay".
I've just scraped off the mold lines and any super thick paint and primered right over them.

Nice zombie Batman, Jim  ;)

There is a specific product used by miniatures painters in France to strip paint on plastic miniatures : Glanzer.

I tried it on Alkemy plastic miniatures and it works perfectly. People use it on GW plastic, model kits but I never tried on Heroclix minis (I paint over the existing paint).

10 to 20 minutes for plastic and a few hours for a pewter miniature and it is cleaner than with an acetone bath.

I don't know if it is sold in UK or USA. This product is used to wash tiles. I am sure you can find it under another name.

Paint his face as a white mask and you could have "Batman of the Opera" :~}

acetone works on heroclix figures (at least, mine  :D). BUT you must not dip them into acetone, and more important, not let them into acetone for ages. And of course be carefull since acetone is a dangerous chemical product.

The best way to use acetone on heroclix figures is to brush it on the figure, so you can control the effect. ;)

For next figures, take a look here :

Looks like Batman took a dive into one of the vats at Axis Chemicals ;)

I hope it wasn't too expensive.

But should he not have green hair then ;)

Let's assume it was a different vat ;)

Also, he does have green hair, but it's hidden under the cape!

Since you haven't mentioned him, I presume that Robin escaped from his deathtrap..... :D

Yes indeed!!  I had a hankering to paint up a Batman, but not so with the Boy Wonder.

He escaped to warn the others.

@YIU: Glanzer doesn't work on the industrial paint they use on Heroclix...
