Fantasy siege tower
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:23:09 AM »
This is a project I have been working on for a while - inspired by a cantilever design by Da Vinci with an Asian twist and with little design elements and details added. It stands just under 12" high and is intended for use with my Haradrim/Fantasy Middle Eastern armies. The ramp allows 3 figures abreast for rapid deployment. It has a crew capacity of 12 archers. Motive power is provided by elephants (or trolls)

The rear ladder is hinged to allow access to the storeys

The assault level has a hinged 'storm flap' that can be raised at the last moment and used as a partial shield from incoming missiles
Warriors dreams, summer grasses, all that remains

amazing work!

but ... question!
You surely intend to siege something, so running across the top-planks to the castle is ... ahm? ... mendatory?

Did You include some counter weight - just to be sure?

however - brilliant and very cool! love to see this one painted - or do You intend to keep it that way?
Maybe instead of painting it, it might be a good idea just to use some clear-sighted wood-lacquer (or stains?)

so cool! I like the shape of the tower!
that's a great job, can't wait to see it painted! =)

for Drachen, i think that a tower is specifically built for a certan siege, so i think that the heigh of the planks is studied appropriately! ;)

In keeping with the theme of my fantasy army I will probably paint it a brick red or crimson, possibly with a painted serpent motif up the sides, but I've undercoated the inside with an acrylic dark brown and will use peat brown drawing ink as a stain/lowights with lots of drybrushing.
Like my cloud ladders, the ramp angle is adjustable so can cater for battlement heights from 8" to 11" high. That'll be more than sufficient to take on my fortress 'Sahyun' and the 'Rammas Echor' I've already constructed.
I have the option of modelling additional counterweights, probably a pair of stones attached by chains - counterweights were a feature of Da Vinci's design, but he had to compensate for the additional weight of a triangular pent-house of wood and rawhide over the assault ramp. My original design concept called for raw hide screens secured along the chains of the assault ramp.

lovely piece of work.

Once comment though - wooden siege towers burn nicely - would suggest you add some protection to the front and sides, as any respectable general is going to torch it with fire arrows long before you get near the castle wall.  The shielding can add to the overall effect - either shiny shields, or soaked hides.

A fire retardant alum coating works just as well - thanks to some fiendish medieval islamic chemistry. I did think of adding rawhides but the smell  :o ;)
