Paint scheme(s) for German A7V tanks at Villers Bretonneux
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:07:19 PM »
Research says Nixe 561 was the first and main tank in the battle. Two other A7Vs arrived later. I'm assuming they were the Schnuck and Elfriede, although the Siegfried was also in their unit.

Can anyone confirm which German tanks were involved? And what paint schemes each had?

I have found B&W photos online that show the Nixe, Elfriede and Schnuck in what appears to be "blotchy" (i.e. no black delineation between colors) 3-color camo (I'm assuming brown/green/ochre). Use this for Villers Bretonneux?

Thanks

An A7V Mephisto was captured by Australians at the second battle of Villers Bretonneux.

Update --

Osprey New Vanguard 127 "German Panzers 1914-18" by Steven Zaloga has an illustration of Nixe as appearing at V-B in medium gray.

Have you asked on the landships forum, they would probably be able to help

Thanks, Aircav. For all the times I've visited the Landships site, I hadn't searched the Forum.

Someone had asked the same question. "Mad Zeppelin" answered:

A7V 561: White name "Nixe" front right and rear left. Large white "V" front left and right, rear left and right. One Iron Cross per side. One Iron Cross on front louvre.
(Normal was one on front louvre and one on rear louvre, but 542 showed only the front one after capture. But 542 was not yet completely converted to the Abt.2 style. So, one may guess)

Colour of A7V, monochrome, either light grey or light green, or greenish grey or grey-green. Again, one may guess. (542 is depicted green in a model at the French tank museum that may have been made while eye-witnesses were still around.)

There's no evidence to support that the gun had a different colour than the rest of the tank, and the grey is only one possibility (that becomes more and more improbable with every new little piece of evidence that turns up).

Yes. Based on other A7V posts, Mad Zeppelin is the go-to guy. Amazing what he knows.
