War of 1812, naval battles on the Great Lakes
« on: March 08, 2012, 08:04:04 PM »
Not quite big battalions, but a couple of questions.

What did US Marines look like in 1812, and would any be serving on the Great Lakes?

Who makes them in 28mm? Preferably this side of the pond.

Any recommendations for ships crew figures too.

Thank you for the link.

Half the school club have started building sloops and gunboats.
One of the boys has produced a battalion of (plastic) US infantry by adding British heads to French infantry bodies in greatcoats.
We've also got a battalion of New York artillery (French infantry bodies with British bicorne hats).
Looking at converting plastic Austrian landwehr into a US militia unit, and maybe even try converting Prussian landwehr into Maryland riflemen in hunting shorts.

I'm glad you posted this and are keeping the project going.  The War of 1812 on the Great Lakes, and Lake Champlain, is an area of constant interest for me...I wrote my masters thesis on a small schooner that was built for the fur trade but was pressed into service by the Provincial Marine in 1812...and was later transferred to Royal Navy control in late 1813- early 1814.  "My" Schooner...Nancy...missed being involved in the battle of Putt-In-Bay (Lake Erie) by a couple of days...and after the British Defeat there, she was the only remaining Royal Navy Vessel on the Upper lakes...at least until she was burned in August of 1814.

I also work at a Museum on Lake Champlain which was the site of the Battle of Plattsburgh Bay...a pivotal naval encounter near the end of the War.  As you might imagine we are in the midst of designing and creating a number of displays for the bi-centennial of the war.

If you are not familiar with it already you might consider the book "Lords of the Lake: The Naval War on Lake Ontario 1812-1814" By Robert Malcomsom....it is extremely informative and a pleasure to read.

Please keep us updated as your project continues...and I would love to see pictures of your classes work if you get the chance to take some.

If I can offer any assistance please don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,

Blue

Check out Knuckleduster Miniatures...

http://www.knuckleduster.com/

Forrest Harris just released these miniatures today!!!  His figures are 28mm and have great detail. Old glory ships are nice ships in 28mm as well.
