I'm glad you posted this and are keeping the project going. The War of 1812 on the Great Lakes, and Lake Champlain, is an area of constant interest for me...I wrote my masters thesis on a small schooner that was built for the fur trade but was pressed into service by the Provincial Marine in 1812...and was later transferred to Royal Navy control in late 1813- early 1814. "My" Schooner...Nancy...missed being involved in the battle of Putt-In-Bay (Lake Erie) by a couple of days...and after the British Defeat there, she was the only remaining Royal Navy Vessel on the Upper lakes...at least until she was burned in August of 1814.
I also work at a Museum on Lake Champlain which was the site of the Battle of Plattsburgh Bay...a pivotal naval encounter near the end of the War. As you might imagine we are in the midst of designing and creating a number of displays for the bi-centennial of the war.
If you are not familiar with it already you might consider the book "Lords of the Lake: The Naval War on Lake Ontario 1812-1814" By Robert Malcomsom....it is extremely informative and a pleasure to read.
Please keep us updated as your project continues...and I would love to see pictures of your classes work if you get the chance to take some.
If I can offer any assistance please don't hesitate to ask.
Cheers,
Blue
