Red Sailors uniforms - advice needed
« on: January 13, 2008, 12:31:02 PM »
Hi

I have just undercoated some of the excellent Brigade Russian Sailors from their Storm in the East range.

However the limited sources I have seem to disagree on their uniforms.

I want to do them in the dark uniform. Is this blue, very dark blue (almost black) or actually black. I am talking about the blouses and trousers rather than Pea coats.

The info I have all seem to agree that the sailor collar was light/medium blue with a white trim.

Cap black with black band and gold lettering - would this have been the same during the revolutionary period?

For revolutionary trops there seems to be a lack of red!

Any info gratefully received

I just checked my Osprey Russian Civil War (1)  Red Army :

Naval infantry were dressed in a combination of Imperial Army and Navy Uniforms, but without the insignia and shoulder boards abolished in 1917.

The sailor in the picture has a black  jacket ( I would mix black with a very dark blue )a white trouser and black boots. His undershirt is black and white.

IT is confusing the picture does indicate that black is the primary colour however reading about the Kronstadt revolt the sailors are often refered to as Blue Shirts.  SO I opted for a very dark blue/black and then washed the highlighted areas (grey with a dark blue wash a bit like denim) they look more blue  when I added their Blue collars with the three white strips they suddenly became much more blue/black than the original very black mix.

I think the shirt is blue/black denim that as it fads becomes more blue.  The Bushlat (pea coat) is black and The trousers are also the same as the shirt.  I have also seen pictures of them in whites.  I have painted mine in mixed uniforms

By the way Hi everyone I'm Jules a solo gamer living in Bedford. This is my first post.

Also a Big thanks to LOn of Brigade to get them to me for the Christmas break.
