Question on the French Legion
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:45:27 AM »
With all the French Legion posts lately, I've decided to have a look at the relevant Ospreys. Before they arrive at my doorstep, a question for all you experts here... What periods do Artizan and Foundry cover with their FL miniatures? Are they compatible? Both size wise and period wise?

Artizan covers the period 1890-1914, the figures being most suitable for operations in the Sud-Oranais near the Moroccan border between 1899 and 1907, notably Lyautey's frontier campaign of 1904-1907. They're also perfect for the invasion of Morocco in 1907 and the subsequent French protectorate over the country, along with continued operations in Algeria all the way up to 1918.

As far as I can recall, Foundry does not have much of a Foreign legion range, just one pack sculpted by Mike Owen when he started working for them. If these are the figure you are referring to, they are later légionnaires, more suitable for the post WW1 era and beyond :

Foundry also do 1860s Legion for the Mexican Adventure.

I think those inter-war-ish ones posted by Arthur were originally listed in Foundry's WW2 range.

Couldn't tell you about size, as I own none of the figures so far mentioned. But the general guide is the older the Foundry figure, the smaller it is.

I thought I would jump in here and mention Dixon figures for French Foreign Legion, period 1890-1900 particularly the Dahomey war.  I purchased these figures recently and was rather impressed with the detail and poses.  Still ashamed to mention they haven't been painted yet .

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Gray,
I have some ASkari German sailors and found they were good, how do they stack up against the Dixons?
