Ancient Wars: Sparta
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:30:31 PM »
Today stumbled upon these amazing screenshots of that PC Game "Ancient Wars: Sparta". Has anyone played it? Any good?

That shipyard is especially amazing, would be a great fun to build that for 28mm terrain.

These games do look very nice but I wonder how much is made up and how much is based on reality  :)

sure, Jim, not all there is based on reality, that's just a game :)

An appropriate ancient shipyard would look like this:

I used to have this game. It's very nice to look at, and the combat in it is quite good, units actually block with the shields they aren't just for show, etc... it is however very difficult - the AI seems to build entire armies in the same time it takes you to get 10 units. It may be a bit dated now, but it'll be cheap enough to be worth a go for some inspiration. There should be a demo too.

I really do like the picture Prof, These are late Roman ships like the ones found at Mainz. They were found in very good condition. There are some very nice replica's of the at the museum. There is also one which goes out on the Rhine, which I would love to see.

I need 1,5 hours to get to that museum. Will take a look at these ships as soon as possible :) Thanks for the hint, Stephen!

Your very welcome but you're makeing me very very envious Prof; I am planning to go to Mainz and was thinking of tagging it on to my first outing to the Crisis show at Antwerp this year but I’m now thinking of going in June if not this year then it will be next year. I have done two models of two of the boats that were found there and also one of the Rhine barge all in 1:200th.  Have a good time there and please do let us know how it goes and lots of photos :)

The boats that they found were in use for around fifty years as there were repairs to the boat which they have dated to be 40-50 years younger than that of the main hull.

Also have looks at the repeating ballista they have there, one was found on one of these ships too. It is said to have been able to load five bolts at a time and would automatically load the next bolt when pulled back to fire. What I would like to know is was it like a magazine or was it a hopper on top and you just dropped the bolts in?
