Side project - Skaven warband
« on: March 24, 2012, 08:53:01 AM »
Fellow collectors might know this all too well. You see a miniature on ebay you really want to get and after bidding for it, you view what else the seller has to offer. As you want to have something for the postage you might end up paying, you start to bid on things you don't really want, but hey offering just 99 Pence for this Elf or that Ork can't be wrong after all. Once the auction is over, you might eventually end up with ten or so miniatures you don't really want but missed the fellow you were really after. The lead pile grows and grows. So I ended up owning almost the entire classic Skaven range without ever really collecting them.

So I decided to build up a small Warband featuring all of the classic range Jes Goodwin sculpted in the 80s, there are just 65 different Skaven, two Rat Ogres, one Casualty and ten Giant Rats (I added the other six from the (A)D&D range). with the exception of the Jezzail Rest every Skaven will just appear once. as there are already a lot of variants within the basic range, I don't think a big army would make any sense. But these would work as decent villains for Dungeoncrawls (remember Advanced Heroquest)?

BTW: does anybody own a spare Slave with Halberd 2 Ref:

It's the only one I am still missing.

lol You described perfectly the Evilbay mechanism.
And...very nice collection!  :o I'm painting some of them for commission and your models are really inspiring. They seems very nicely painted but photographs aren't so good :/

Your Skaven look fantastic. I am relatively new to hobby so I enjoy seeing classic minis. I am also beginning to fall prey to "view seller other items".

You have summed up about 50% of my ebay purchases very well!  lol

Lovely looking figures, painted up very well.
You can never have too many Skaven.  ;)

They look ace,

I always think it doesn't matter if you've fallen into the ebay trap as long as you paint them.

The paintjobs are ace!

What's with all the Skaven lately? Is it the year of the rat?  :D

I'm right behind you mate, surprisingly easy to just accidently collect the range. =)

Great rats!

You've got to love those skaven sculpts and all the more so when nicely painted - good work!

Wow, these are some of your best, Welf! Saved for inspiration. I've been collecting skaven on the side as well with a mind for villains for story type games. Well, I collect every old school Warhammer faction with that in mind, but the skaven have grown to become a pretty fair warband and yes, Advanced HereQuest flavor adventures are what to do with these. I'll be staying well away from the AHQ rules themselves though.  :)

I think I mentioned it on another thread that you can't beat the old Jez sculpts and you've done a great job on them  8)

My favourites are the slaves with normal hand weapons, simple and yet very effective as figures.

Great rats!

Strangly enough even third edition skaven armies are not the difficult to collect. Maybe it's just because the armies on sale are often so big that not a lot of people want to buy them.

Don't hear me complaining though.  ;D

One has to keep in mind that those Skaven were available a very long time (almost 15 years). Most of the models were only replaced around 2000 and one could get them afterwards through mail order. And the Rathandler is without doubt one of the oldest miniatures (being from 1987 and available until 2010)

There are not a lot of models from GW that survived so many Warhammer editions.

BTT: Welf, I cannot help you with the missing slave. That seems to be one I am also missing. Not that I collect
