Best colour for indian (feather not dot) skin
« on: March 27, 2012, 02:42:12 PM »
Hello lot,

I'm currently painting my Indians with a mix of Games Workshop Dark Flesh and P3 Khardic Flesh giving a redbrown thing.. BUT I'm not that happy about it and I thought I'd attempt a shortcut and just ask you guys if someone has the perfect idea of which colour to use for my Mohicans

Here's my method, I currently mostly use Foundry paints, but used the same method with more mixing before that:

I use the Foundry system BUT:
None of the fancy ethnic sets, I start on a base of darkest "Dark Flesh A", but don't use the other 2. Very little of this is left showing, any decent dark brown would do.
I then go for a mix of Dark Flesh Shade and Flesh Shade A.
Then Flesh Shade A.
Then a mix of Flesh Shade A and Flesh B.
Then Flesh B for.
Then a mix of Flesh B and Flesh Light C.
Then Flesh Light C for small highlight emphasis.

I find the overall effect of the Foundry system is good, but sometimes, as with flesh, the stages are too harsh for my liking.

For Native Americans, I use exactly the same, but stop short of Flesh C.

I hope that's of some help, I'm quite happy with the result, take a look round our website and see what you think:

There are loads of other methods, you'll notice quite a few different ones on the Customers' Gallery page of our site, and there are others equally valid scattered around on old Lead Adventure threads, here's a thread worth perusing:

and the subject has come up on several occasions so worth having a bit of a search, someone's bound to point them out to us ... I hope ;)

Thank you major!

I'm having a little trouble finding the paints you are mentioning at foundry's homepage. Could it be that they've renamed everything to make it more fantastical or something?

Funny that you should find my thread. The minis I'm painting are actually from your splendid establishment. Bought a blister at The Tactica in Hamburg with a handwritten 'Hurons' sticker on front but the blisterpack otherwise clearly said Mohicans and that was also what it contained I think... haha! Anyway they're Indians!

Glad to hear you're using my Indians Dr, a bit odd that they've been wrongly over-labelled  :? still, I reckon they'll be Mohawk.

Thanks for the paint link Iain, actually, the colours I use are:
http://wargamesfoundry.com/paint_and_brushes/paint_pallettes/any/any/flesh_5_paint_pallette_col005/?sector_id=
but stopping short of the lightest one for highlighting Indians gives a similar result to the more specialised Native American Flesh palette.

Dr, either one will do a good job I'm sure  :)

For an alternative I use the Vallejo colors. I start with the game color beast brown (same as GW beastial brown). Next layer is a 1:1 mix of Beast brown and bronzed flesh. Then 1:2 beast brown and bronzed flesh. The optional final highlighting is the same as the last with a smal drom of either an ivory or elf flesh thrown in. It winds up looking like this:

I use a base coat of Red Brown...my choice is Iron Wind Metals, but just about any good red brown should work.  Then I dry brush an ruddy flesh over it -- not a pale flesh, but a nice medium flesh tone.  Finally, I do a black wash, and it turns out nicely, I think.

Sorry, no pictures handy, but I start with ruddy flesh and then use a red brown wash - and that's it.  Works for me, simple, quick, effective.  Then add any body paint, etc. (as in skin decoration done by the Indian to himself)
