Very good indeed! Are you gonna deep them or highlight and wash? =)

ACW is a very interesting period, unfortunately i have no time for it =(

Cheers! I'm going to dip them with Army Painter Dark Tone. If I didn't have the dip, I would not be able to finish my units so quickly  ;D

that's always the problem right, lack of time! There so many other things I would also like to do. What is your main project?

Just finished mine and I am going to apply the matte finish.

I save time by skipping the intense detail of the blanket roll, I know they look great with this detail on them, but "oh well". :D

Do you literally dip yours or do you brush the dip on.....looking good, I cant belive sometimes what the dip does for the figures.

I brush it on. I never really understood the need of literally dipping them into a can, it's such a messy business. But yeah, it works so well. you get great results very quickly (I just don't have the time or patience to paint them in the traditional manner)

Well that is pretty damn awesome!

It would appear that dry brushing a bit reaps a significant enhancement of the resulting dip.

Re: painting ACW Confederate infantry, a blog: part 9 *varnish*

So, let's talk varnish. I think it is fair to say that everyone has his or her own method. It took me a while to figure out what worked best on dipped figures. I started out with a spray can, but that made a mess (cracks, and often a white milky trace)

So no spray cans for me. I used to have a small bottle of testors varnish, the acrylic version, but I found out that they do not produce it anymore. So I was left with Testors Dullcote (Model Master), the enamel one. Not a fan of enamel, it stinks up the place, but I gave it a go. And you know what? if you want a 100% matt finish, this is the one to go for.

Unfortunately, darker colors become foggy, this is especially noticable on ACW northern troops with their dark blue uniforms. I fixed this by giving my figures a second coat of varnish, namely, Vallejo matt varnish

So, two coats of varnish. The first by Model Master, to completely negate the glossy finish of the dip, and a second coat of Vallejo varnish, to counteract the fogginess. You may ask, "why not one coat of Vallejo varnish?" Well I've tried, and it is simply not strong enough to negate the gloss effect of the dip. anyway, here are two pictures. the first, after the first coating, and then one with the second coating of varnish

So, how long from start to finish on this nice job?
