A Oxford! A Oxford!
« on: April 02, 2012, 09:27:33 PM »
I'm currently putting together a series of vignettes based around Agincourt as when I were painting up the mini's for the Battle of Verneuil demo for Salute last year they kind of got wrapped up in bubble wrap and it didn't seem likely that they would see the light of day again until 2015.

The first is based on Richard de Vere, Earl of Oxford who commanded one of the English battles at Agincourt. There's a lot more info re: Richard de Vere and many more pics on my La Journee blog.....

Very nice indeed  :-*

Going to be picky now (but probably proved wrong  lol ) but shouldn't it be 'An Oxford! An Oxford!'  :)

A Oxford means "To Oxford" isn't it another way of saying "Rally on me!"  ;)

In the modern Parlance yes. not so sure about Medieval Middle English though Jim? Happy to be corrected if anyone knows a bit more about this subject? Remember, we're not talking Shakespeare here more like Chaucer?

It was found to be more inspiring, if somewhat less grammatically perfect than 'Look, a Morris Minor!'

Lovely vignette.  The Perry HYW range is superb and I have to be very strict with myself least I go bonkers and order a tonne of them.  Of course seeing things like this isn't exactly helpful.

On the subject of using "A" as a kind of prefix to a statement (eg A York! A York!) it was recalled by De Warrin that the English archers crashed into the flanks of the Scots at the Battle of Verneuil with a great cry of "A Clarence! A Clarence!". sounds OK so far but for the fact that Clarence had been dead for a good while as he was mauled after an ill fated (and pretty damn stupid!) cavalry charge at the Battle of Bauge a couple of years earlier during the HYW.

As an aside, Clarence was invalided home by his brother Henry V during the Seige of Harflour and as a consequence missed the glorious victory at Agincourt. It may, and indeed has been, postulated that his ill fated charge and refusal to wait for his archers to catch up may have resulted in his death at Bauge.

Darrell.
