Sokoto, Darfur and The Mad Mullah
« on: April 04, 2012, 01:56:50 PM »
I've been reading some articles on these campaigns and they look tempting. Copplestone, Brigade Games, Perry and Woodbine seem to have a good number of suitable figures. Anyone found suitable figures for the Somaliland Camel Corps?

Nope. Conversion is the way to go. I've been working on turning Perry Camel Corps into "generic" turbaned camel riders that can be used either as Sudanese or Somaliland camel corps (actually I'm making them as Sudanese, but planning to use them as proxies in Somaliland games).

Also made a start on some 1903 KAR for Somaliland:

My Dar Fur project has stalled for lack of decent Sudanese infantry. I may have to go the same route I did with my 1903 KAR, but it is a lot of converting, and I'm not sure I fancy doing it. Got a load of Mahdists to use as the Fur, too.

A work-in-progress shot of one of my Sudanese for Dar Fur...

(Sorry the photo quality is a bit shit, and the painting is barely started.)

It's a Perry Camel Corps fellow with a Woodbine designs Senegalese head put on him, and a greenstuff turban made for him. His long trousers have been turned into shorts with greenstuff, too. The gun should really be a Lee, I think. But plenty of folks were still using Martini-Enfields in the Great War, so I decided I couldn't be bothered messing with his gun, and I don't suppose anyone would even notice without my bringing it up.

The blob on top of the turban is his feather hackle...

The Somali uniform was a little different, and the so was their turban...

But they are similar enough, and I am lazy enough that I'll probably use my Sudanese as both. But I may yet do a second bunch and so have proper figures for both. We'll just have to see.

Looking good. I think this project involves a lot of conversions (also of the religious kind) and/or the use of proxy figures. I'll have to dig for more images to get an idea of what can be used. This guy used 1/72 scale plastic figures for his Mad Mullah extravaganza:

I would go mad converting that many 28mm figures.
