Ancient Germanic shields
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:52:09 PM »
Can anyone point me to good information (if any exists) online or printed on the evolution of ancient german shields?

Most manufacturers mix all kinds of shields together, of course based on the little evidence available. So rectangular, oval octagonal, celtic shield bosses or not.
But thinking of it it would make more sense to assume that certain tribes used certain designs of shields, local culture and tradition produced by their own artisans.
And when were these designs changed for the classical early saxon round shield?
If you don't believe in lead, you're already dead.

I believe the round shield period started around the 5th century AD

Thanks both for the links.
These line drawings are great. The wonderful colour pics are from the ospreys that I own, but I think they're too generic. I just don't believe that people from the same tribe would have this massive variation in design. Neither would the Marcomanni have the same shields as, say, the Cheruli or the Frisii.

I'll have to do some research into this Podstawie site...
