I'm fairly happy with the terrain I've been making lately.  But- one area where I'd like to improve is in making foliage.

I want to make a large ruined temple that I can use for both Pulp (lost world/explorer) and Fantasy gaming, and I'd like the temple to have a fair amount of tropical foliage around it/hanging over it/growing out of it.

I've seen pictures of people's work, using aquarium and plastic craft shop plants, and some of the terrain built with those has been amazing.  I've also seen some really cool model railroading terrain with lots of great foliage.

So, if I want to step up my game in adding greenery to my terrain, where's a good place to start?  I always seem to only be able to find finished photos, rarely tutorials.

Can the fine folks here provide some links?  Maybe even here on the LAF (or TMP or Frothers?)?  Preferably with lots of photos!

Thanks!

I recently made a whole heap for myself as seen in this photo:

If you are interested I can make a tutorial as it was dead easy to make, and it wont be too much of a problem, as I will be making some more soon.

The best terrain-making site on the web is Terragenesis, in my opinion:

http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page11.html has 17 articles on different sorts of foliage from palm trees to floating alien spore-plants.

There will also be stuff in the projects section the site as well.

Oh, holy smokes - I'd forgotten about Terragenesis!  I haven't looked there in years!

Thanks very much for the reminder!

Sheerluck - I like your stuff!  Particularly the giant ferns and the patches of grass - I'd love to hear how you made them!

The best foliage I've seen is Elladan's.
He's got some pretty clear step by step guides on how he's done his bocage as well. http://elladan.de/

OK - I finally made an attempt at a tutorial for how I put my trees and grass together.

You can see it on my blog: http://shelldrakewargames.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/scenery-tutorial.html

All of the trees etc in the photo I posted at the start of this topic were made this way.

It's interesting that you are using corrugated cardboard for your bases.  I usually use thin MDF, but that's kind of a pain to cut and sand. Your cardboard method would be quicker, and easier I think.

Does the cardboard stand up to use over the long term? and any warping problems?

So far there has been no warping - I think this may be due to the masking tape. That and the small size might help too.

And I have had some of these scenic pieces since 2008 and still no warping.
