I know it's been a while since I suggested them, but as I recently ordered the Copplestone 15mm Yetis and they arrived today I figured I'd take a (shockingly bad) pic with some 28mm minis:

Have you considered Heroclix?  Cheap and pretty good Gorilla city warriors are widely available.



Also Grodd their leader stands out and would proxy well for an ape-man leader I think.
