Can anyone point me to good information (if any exists) online or printed on the evolution of ancient german shields?
Most manufacturers mix all kinds of shields together, of course based on the little evidence available. So rectangular, oval octagonal, celtic shield bosses or not.
But thinking of it it would make more sense to assume that certain tribes used certain designs of shields, local culture and tradition produced by their own artisans.
And when were these designs changed for the classical early saxon round shield?
