28mm Armoured Car : The Ratel
« on: June 02, 2012, 10:24:12 AM »
Received this today from the printers.

28mm sized Armoured Scout Car.

This was a test print, but am very pleased with the results. The Print lines, whilst visible are actually pretty none existent. I've taken some moulds of the surface this morning and am confident that once the model is cast and primed they wont be an issue at all.

Am working on a few extra weapon options too.

Scaled to work with figures on round slottas.

Absolute nightmare to photograph this new material though!

Cheers

Adam

Very nice one! Is it at Frosted Ultra details from Shapeways? Or did you use moddler?

As I said elsewhere, market the clear version as a future modern coaked stealth tank?

Very nice, get some undercoat on a master cast so we can see it more clearly.

Largest wargaming piece I have seen using a 3D printer.

What's your feelings on the process, wiffwaff?

Are you going to go full bore into 3D scultping?

3d design takes a while to get your head round. It's very easy to over design a piece.

Will be spending more time and money on 3D in the future. It will go hand in hand with traditional sculpting for me though. Certain things can be done quicker and better on a Mac and others by hand and putty

What sort of price did something that size cost if you dont mind me asking.

This will be sold so cant give full details but it's a 3 figure price in Sterling Just to get it printed, and you also need to find someone that knows what they're doing. It took us several attempts to find a competent firm with high spec enough printer

Looks like a quality print, and a great design.

What about a 15mm version? I'd take at least one off your hands.

Decided to prime this before casting.

That seemed to show the print lines up massively though so... I soaked it in industrial paint and varnish remover to remove the primer.

Primer dissolved but so did the model...

Lesson to be learnt.

Ok...that's really bad news  :? :? :? What's the name of the material used for the print? The company who did the print should have warned you about what to use/not to use when painting the vehicle.

The majority of paint removers will destroy plastic. If you use an acrylic primer which is plastic based and use something that can dissolve that...

Bad news. Are you going to have another printed and continue?
So many projects..... so little time.......
