A tribute to Peter Connolly
« on: May 06, 2012, 02:14:22 PM »
If you missed the news in the Prof's Daily Ancient thread: Peter Connolly, prolific historian and great artist, passed away last Thursday, 3rd of May.
To pay tribute to this man's work and its great influence on myself, I painted up a Roman soldier, probably one of the core interests of Mr Connolly. Namely, it's an aquilifer from the Late Republican era.

Excellent.

He was indeed, a great influence (on me, at any rate).

A worthy tribute, Tilman, indeed. Impressive figure and your painting makes it looking simply gorgeous. Well done.

Also I've enjoyed (as usual) reading your blog. It's always a pleasure to be there.

Sad to hear of the passing of Peter Connolly. I remember attending a lecture of his at Warwick University, during which he (while discussing the sarrissa) bent down and calmly picked up a replica then proceeded to wave it over the heads of the front rows. A man who knew how to enthuse his audience. He will be sadly missed.
