Anybody got any recipes for olive skin?
« on: May 07, 2012, 06:08:34 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has any decent olive skintone recipes (preferably using GW paints, seeing as that's what I have).

I've already had to toothbrush-and-acetone-strip a figure two-and-a-half times in one night (granted, the last time was because of a problem with my gesso) and if I inhale any more fumes, I suspect I'll start walking into walls or something. That or my liver will serve me with a restraining order.

(I don't usually use nearly so much, but lordy-lord did I ever bungle the job).

EDIT: This is sort of the effect I'm looking for, though I'm thinking more "Mediterranean" rather than Asian:

Please and thanks!

Try GWs Tallarn Flesh. I've used it to good effect.

For arabic skin I've used it neat, followed by a wash of devlan mud, and then reapplied tallarn flesh, I think I used a 50:50 mix of tallarn flesh and elf flesh for highlights.

I'd use the same basic formula but after the wash of devlan mud, I'd apply a 75:25 mix of tallarn flesh to elf flesh, and lighten up the the highlights. Never tried it, but I think it may work.

Also to get darker asian/north african skin, start with either neat beastial brown or a mix of beastial brown and tallarn flesh.

Man I gotta love tallarn flesh! The only worry is I don't think they sell it anymore  :'(

Cheers
Andy

Link doesn't seem to work, andrew. Sorry!

And I (sadly), don't have any tallarn flesh. I'll see if I can suss some out from a local store... if I'm lucky they still haven't sent back their old paints yet. If not, I think the new equivalent is supposed to be Cadian Fleshtone.

Edit: Never mind, got the link to work. It just needed a few characters on the end pruned.

GW snakebite leather on a black undercoat
Gradually add some flesh  and mix with snakebite ( I use VJ flesh mid tone- but it should work with  GW flesh I would think) and add lighter flesh to progressive mix according to taste
That's how I did my arabs - this is Mustaffa Neyop (pays to get the eyes right lol)

I use the foundry triads for everything but caucasion. They have middle eastern and oriental sets which should do the trick.

I had the same troubles looking for a natural looking mediterranian skin tone.
I remember using tallarn flesh, then a wash with ogryn flesh as a base. Then I made a mix of tallarn flesh and Vallejo bronzed flesh (I think the old GW bronzed flesh would also work...How I miss this colour!) with gradualy more Vallejo until I got the effect I wanted. I donīt remember if I gave then another wash with ogryn flesh or gryphone sepia but I think thatīs not so necessary ::)
Here the result:

Edit: Maybe you can make highlights with the bronzed flesh on the tallarn flesh BEFORE applying ogryn wash, and then make a pair of highlights more with bronzed flesh once it is dried. Every layer of bronzed flesh should then be more watered-down that the previous one and be aplied on a more little surface, so you donīt have to mix the colours in order to get lighter ones. The colour progression should be very smooth that way :)
It is only another idea if you want to do it quickier :)

That's a very nice tone on that figure.

I eventually used the tallarn flesh mixed with various other things and several washes, (mostly with sepia to warm the tone) and produced this figure:

Perhaps a touch more middle-eastern than Mediterranean, but my photo shows the skin just a touch darker than it is in real life and it's close enough for me that I can chalk it up to a slightly deeper tan.  :D
