Very impressive - congrats both to you and the absurdly generous builder!
Back from the dead, almost.

If a friend gives me a present, it's a bit of waste foam I can use to scratchbuild a piece of a castle.

Your friend gives you the whole castle!

You move in better circles than I do :'(

Thanks  :) I was going to build a castle in the near future, but now I donīt have to..and it  probably wouldnīt have been anywhere near as good as this one.
I am so jealous!! Materials??
The basing, to make the hills /levels, is sheets of styrofoam.
The roof tiles are all individually cut from card..I dread to think how long just that took them !!
The removable roofs (4 can be taken off ) are actually timber framed inside, beams and lathes made using matchsticks..same as the catwalks.
The flooring is made from plaster of paris..they let it dry and then scratched a stonework pattern into it. The stone work is the etched card that is used for train dios..made by Vollmer, I found writing on the inside of one of the house. (all the main buildings are removable and have min-electric lights..but the bulbs have all blown and need replacing)
They built it as part of a history of Architecture degree and wanted to see "firsthand" how they constructed buildings back then..a sort of "fix it in your mind" by doing thing.
They also constructed catapults to scale..(one came with the castle..a model of a  Petraria Arcatinus and it works!) wagons and a few more buildings including a medieval windmill. They said that when they find them I can have them as well  :)
