Dr Mathias's Post Apocalypse
« on: May 16, 2012, 01:16:29 AM »
As I've had some requests to see more of my Round 10 LPL entry, "Return of the Mariner", I thought I'd start a thread with some additional views and WIP shots.

The trimaran is about half the size it would be if it were made to scale, so that it can actually do some maneuvering on the tabletop. The Major General Tremorden Rederring's site taught me everything I know about boat scale :)

The hull is made of wood, probably pine, and masonite strips. As a sailboat owner, it was painful to have to abstract the rigging and details for a game piece, but by the end I was happy to have simplified it a bit. I had the jetskis cast a couple years ago but not assembled- beyond that everything else was built and painted within 6 days.

The raised areas on the hull that represent edges of patches were made with puffy paint.

The wakes are separate from the jetskis. I'm going to use them as my method of measuring movement. They're made with a thin sheet of clear plastic, probably acrylic. I'm not sure where I acquired it. The water effect is high temperature hot glue, with a thin wash of transparent blue green craft paint.

As a final detail on the wakes, I took some gloss acrylic gel medium and did what you're not supposed to- I overmixed it by whipping it with a ratty paintbrush. This introduced airbubbles and created a frothy looking clear paint. I applied this to the tops of the wakes and let it dry overnight. The next day I mixed up another frothy gel medium blend and added a little white paint.

The jetski is a plastic toy I modified a bit and cast in resin. The riders are from so many different sources and miniature manufacturers I can't begin to name them.

The refugee atollers/drifters are a mix of miniatures. The old sea salt with the shotgun and knife, striped shirt guy, and the guy with the sawfish jaw sword, are from a Lead Adventure Miniatures 'Contaminated Seas' pack. The good lookin' fella with the paddle is Grimm from the LAM Forum characters range. The women are Shadowforge scavengers from the sci-fi range.

The mariner, without whom this would not have happened, is the "Aqua Scout" from Lead Adventure. Great likeness in my humble opinion- even down to the seashell earring.

Lastly, here's a shot of the set up. Pretty simple, just three sheets of blue cellophane giftwrap wrinkled up and layered on top of each other, all over a white foamboard. The same blue posterboard backdrop can be seen in a few other LPL entries.

I think that's about it, thanks for looking!

Greetings

oh wow

just with a few words you make it seem so simple and yet it is not  :D

Great work and great walk-through. I definitely like that entry but somehow I liked they way you made the waves and the froth best.

Thank you for telling and showing

Great looking miniatures.

I especially love your trimaran, and the jetskis, and water effects for them, that you've created.  The frothy water certainly makes the overall effect really pop.

Do you recall where you got the jetski from, or who the manufacturer is?

I can't seem to find any, anywhere, and could use a few.

Really great work!

but, showing my inability to stay focus, is that a Wargames Factory figures on the left in the last pictures? I would like to see more ;)

Some terrific stiff here: the wakes are brilliant!  But it really did suffer when all crammed into one picture.

Genius. The movie wasn't half as good as your diorama.
