How to glue foamed PVC (Palight)?
« on: 21 May 2012, 10:19:31 PM »
After a bit of a break I'm back to working on some Victorian builds. Until now I've used foamboard but I've finally converted to foamed PVC (Palight). Having a bit of a problem gluing it together though, I usually use Copydex but it's not working very well so I'm toying with the idea of No Nails. Any other suggestions?

I've always used a reasonable quality cyanoacrylate (superglue) such as Rocket.  Light sanding or roughing of the joints areas can help, particularly on the flat surfaces.  Edges of the sheet bound very well.

Cheers Paul. Svennn recently gave me an industrial strength substance similar to superglue so I'll give that a bash.

PVC does not react with cyanacrilic, so it might work. If you are using polistyrene instead, you shall choose for something slower to set, but less aggressive, like some epoxy glue, or PVA and... a lot of patience! =)

You can get 'Foam Safe' superglue these days, it's a bit more expensive but also doesn't smell which is an added bonus. I've used the Bob Smith 'Gold' and Venom 'Foam Safe' with no problems gluing foam to metal and card.

Just go to a local hardware store and get the solvent they make to glue PVC pipe together - in the US, it is dyed purple so you can see where you are putting it.  It works just fine.  I know - I've sold more pallets of that foamed PVC (Palight, Komatex, Sintra, Foamacell, etc) than I care to think about.

I've moved to using UHU glue for foamed PVC, it gives a strong join but is flexible enough to allow you to fix any mistakes or misplacements if you act quickly.
