Matchstick Buildings For Fantasy, Medieval (Human or Alien)?
« on: September 20, 2020, 12:12:18 AM »
Stuff like this makes me want to buy a huge bag of “matchsticks” and a tub of white glue:

Anyone still using matchsticks to make wargaming terrain?  Or is that something only kids do these days?

I do have a big bag of matchsticks, & coffee stirrers, lollipop sticks etc. etc.
They are great for building wooden bridges & half timbered parts of buildings.
For building itself I prefer Blue Foam.

It looks very appropriate for fantasy, and kids aren't the only ones playing fantasy-inspired miniature games or RPGs.

You can buy bags of "matchsticks" that don't have the match heads on them.

I tend to use a combination of balsa and basswood strips and medium or heavy cardstock to scratchbuild miniature buildings, saving foam for actual terrain pieces, or occasionally stonework. But that video of what looks like a gnome/elf house built out of matchsticks was certainly entertaining, and serves to show that scratchbuilding isn't really "difficult" as such.

It's more like taking a leap into the unknown, and dealing with design and engineering issues as you go along.

I still do. There are bigger ones for cigars, which are better and there are huge ones for lighting fire places...
They are good for timberwork, fences and sheds.

I see no point in making terrain out nothing but matchsticks and glue. Where  suitable, sure.
