Need help with some French Gear Krieg names...
« on: May 28, 2012, 01:04:22 PM »
Hi everyone,

as some of you may have noticed I am writing the new Gear Krieg edition right now.
Gear Krieg is all about early and mid war initially.
I will include corresponding army lists for German, US, British, Soviet, Japanese, French and Polish forces.
The French already have the Tesla cannon armed Maginot line and a huge tank armed with a Tesla cannon.
I am also planning to included an experimental walker platoon consisting of donated US Early walkers. And for these I need some proper french names, maybe even some background fiction about the dashing heroes that formed this unit!

Who want to help?
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

Nope, more like a translation of Combat walker, or armoured Warfighter etc.
Preferable from a native french speaking person...

As a french, i could also help you with translation or with ideas. ;)

By exemple :

Combat walker => Marcheur de combat
Armored combat walker => Marcheur de combat blindé
Two feet combat walker => Marcheur de combat bipode
Four feet combat walker => Marcheur de combat quadripode

And you can also use some variations.

"Marcheur" (translation for "walker") would be an excellent base for any name you might come with, definitely.

Thanks already!
Is any of you already familiar with Gear Krieg or even Victory Decision?

For the Alfie's Tenners training comic, set in the fall of 1940, I set up the "Free French Walker Corps", all three members of it. (recruits to the Allied side were slow at first historically). I didn't do anything about translating the name, because apart from those them, the two French Canadians and that Pole, everyone's native toungue was English.
Read "Alfie's Tenners", appearing in Aurora magazine!

Not familiar with any of them. I have the Victory Decision rules printed near my bed but i'm waiting for the good time to take a good look at. Maybe it is now ?

One thing I've always found amusing is how an armoured car is an "automitrailleuse", which can be read as "self-machine-gunning". "Marcheur de combat" is the easiest term to work with, and to go with what the French did historically, I would have them use the same names everyone else does for the vehicle models.

Looking through a few magazines and the web, I noticed that a lot of tank regiments kept older designations, such as the ever so common Régiments de Chasseurs d'Afrique, and most of the reconnaissance groups (like the GRDI and GRCA) stayed unreconstructed for the FFL and the Armée d'Afrique. One case where two types of regiments share the same acronym (like the "Regiment de Chars de Combat" and the "Régiment de Chasseurs à Cheval"), the newer one gets bumped with a higher number (500+ for the tanks). Although I haven't yet come across any French unit using the acronym RMC (Régiment de Marcheurs de Combat).

I can't seem to find any BCC (bataillon de chars de combat) or CACC (compagnie autonome de chars de combat) after 1940, which is sad, because they sound like cool names.
