A short but very depressing movie. Never played Metro 2033 but now I'm thinking about doing just that:

Goddamn-ski, that was depressing. I'll be looking for the game, however.

no I don't think the kids artyom because I think the kid grows up to be the trooper in the final scenes. In the behind the scenes the director or whoever says it's based on artyoms character or some such nonsense.

Metro 2033 is one of the best novels I ever readed. I don't know the video game, but the book is INCREDIBLE.

The Russian's still look pretty Soviety, their army still has the Red star slapped onto a lot of stuff, and their police etc often wear the same stuff.

EDIT: I don't think its in an alternative history as such. Apparently the books background revolves around the conflict between Communism and Fascism within Russia (a very current problem) thus why the two main sides involved are Nazi's and Communists.

Of course it (Moscow metro) would survive. It has been built by the best workers on the planet. For example, even today, a lot of companies hire old russian welders to teach their skills, for example in spacecraft industry, off shore oil industry, because they still some of the best men for this work. ;)

Their social model was based on workers excellence. Have you seen some videos about Moscow subway ? It's just impressive !

Radiation would get them afterwards though. Vaults were Radiation protected I do believe  :D

That said I'm sure your average Russian is radiation resistant.
