my own paint rack production
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:59:30 PM »
Today I want to share with you what i am working on the last days and weeks.

It's my own production of paint racks.

As I am a paint collector as much as miniatures collector I have hundreds of paints from all the differend brands. And as many,  I was long time looking for a solution of space saving well organized possibility to store my paints.

There are many well functioning paint rack solutions on the market but all of them did not satisfied me realy.

So the idea came up to construct my own paint racks.

I startet with a paint rack for the dripper bottles.

I wanted them space saving, all colours visible and that it is possible to store the bottles up side down and "normal"

After some constructions, my first result after a rough assembly looked like
this:

As it stood on my desk I found that it takes too much space.
So I squeezed it a little and I placed the bottles in alternating rows, because this allowed me to go a little closer with each row.

Here now the pictures of the first assembled rack how it looks now.

The one on the pictures shows the rack with space for 40 bottles. I will produce racks for 60, 80 and 100 bottles as well. They are looking the same, just getting more rows and growing in height and depth.

They have to be assembled and are not painted like the on on the picture, this was just a test.

Some information regarding the size:

40 bottles rack (ca.): w:31 cm, h:12 cm, d:11 cm; (12"x 4,7 "x 4,3")
80 bottles rack (ca.): w: 31 cm, h: 23 cm d: 21 cm; (12"x 9.1" x 8.2")

Maybe later on today or tomorrow I can show you some pictures from a large (100 bottles version). I just milled the pieces and I have to assemble them now.

I am planing to do a version for flip top paints next and than maybe even one for the paints of the company who shall not be named.

I know, paint racks are not the most exciting part of our hobby, but maybe the one or other will be interested.

You can soon get them in my shop.

Any comments, suggestions or questions are welcome.

Very nicely made and certainly tempting!

As a suggestion, on the ends where there is an extra gap, maybe you could drill holes for holding brushes upright in?

Clever. German ingenuity. Will it come in a brushed steel finish to? (kidding)

I may very well be a future customer of yours. I have been shopping arround for a better "system" lately.

Thanks for you interest!

@Auton: Thanks for the idea, I thought about that, drilling the wholes is no problem. I am just not sure if it is realy useable because if you store the brushes there you wont be able to get the colour behind easily. But maybe for the top row. I will consider it.

@hammershield: brushed steel finish is just a question of money but of course deliverable

Here you can see the big one, for 100 bottles. It is quite big and it realy depends on your workdesk with version would fit better. This on is 26 cm in deep. I think in most cases the 40, 60 or 80 bottles version will make sense.

Different from my post yesterday I might offer them in steps of 10, so for 20, 30, 40....90 and 100 bottles.

Great job Lurch. I wish my paints were that organized. The 100 bottle rack looks like a store display :)

Since I have limited table space I would probably get a 50 bottle or so rack and keep the less used bottles in their current bag.

I'd be interested in one that fitted Foundry paints.

Lurch, will you have any available at the Hamburger Tactica? Interested in the "upside down" Vallejo racks.

Thanks again,

@PaT.: You may get it with paints as well from me. 8)  Or you take a large rack as kind of collectors-album. With the time normaly the amount of colours increases.

@Strand: I wrote it in the order book! You want he big one right?

@matakishi: give me another 2 or 3 weeks, than the one for the flip top bottles will be ready.

@hammershied: also in the order book

Not sure if you got that right, it is the same rack for upside down and normal. You can use it as you want.
I will be at Tactica. So yes  I will have some racks with me. Better if you pm me before Tactica which sizes you might be interested in, that I will have the right ones with me.

It was planed to have a small sales table at Tactica together with Geboom, but unfortunatley he is not able to join us this year and so I cancelt it.
So if somebody is interested in one of his ships, please pm me or him too.
I can not promise, but there is a good chance that I can take some them to the tactica too.

Looks great! Just a suggestion, it looks like you could put a narrow rack on one or both sides to hold brushes, hobby knives, etc.

Last night I wrote a first version of an assembly instruction for my paint racks.
( or is paint tray the better expression?)

I know it will be difficult to judge without have the pieces on the table, but I would appreciate your comments on it. Do you think it will be helpful and sufficient or do I have to point out something more clear.

The pictures will also give you a better impression on it.

And of course the native and professionel englisch speaking are welcome to give me a nice hint if I wrote something completly wrong or funny (in this case I think I would prefer a PM  :)).

@Aaron: Thanks for your suggestion. Somebody else, I think it was Zoogla, suggested to construct a corner rack too.  I am currently thinking of different enhencements for brushes and/or tools. But it will take a while.

Thanks for your feedback.
