SciFi Junk Outpost - how to finish
« on: May 28, 2012, 11:48:03 PM »
This is my first large terrain project, beyond things like 2D map boards. Some large foam pieces for a LED sign were taken from work, broken, and glued into a foundation pattern. All the rest of the objects are junk bits from construction/electrical surplus. My goal is to make a camp for military forces, or with different interior pieces, a "post-apoc" bartertown. Surfaces are primed, but I'm looking for threads or galleries with similar projects I can reference for final painting. I have a lot of "reinforced concrete" to make look natural, so a process I can use with large brushes/sponges would be great. Sorry about the washed out photo stills  :?

That is really, really cool!

EDIT: As to painting, if you start of with a series of grey colours, dabbing them with a sponge or large brush, it would be a good start. I would then water down some black gesso (water-based undercoat, usually pretty cheap from art shops) as apply that as a wash. I think you'll find that will blend in the shades of grey. After that, get a really light tone and highlight the edges.

You could also go for a covering of polyfilla, or other wood filler product, to add some not-foam texture. I would also suggest pressing a rough rock on to it.

Also rather than using pure grey (white and black) try adding a touch of brown or yellow to it, to get a more natural concrete look.

For references, check out custom Gorka Morka forts and possibly even the Mad Max 2 Refinery.

That looks great!  It should be fantastic when its finished.

The claustrophobic, narrow spaces remind me of the Rage video game demo that I played.

Here's a link to one of my old Necromunda projects: http://www.nwa.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=271:g08hall2&catid=63&Itemid=214#necro

I hope it helps, most of the paints were cheap sprays or sample pots from hardware stores.
