GZG Crusties (updated with heavy and special weapons)
« on: June 03, 2012, 07:15:05 PM »
I'm trying to paint a Crustie army for "Gruntz 15mm" but I don't know what colour scheme I'll use. I'm doing some colour trials but I'm not too convinced about the final result, I sort of like the yellow with dark brown dots but it looks like a little tiger or leopard to me. Any suggestions?

How about a bit more pink....like prawns?

I suppose the stripes could be tiger prawns :~}

They all look great but my favourite is the second from the left. Really lovely painting especially for 15mm.

Thanks mate!! I donŽt still know what to do if just paint them all the same colour scheme (or same colour pallete) or add some more variety in colours (my wife told me this morning: Are they Pawer Rangers? >:( lol. IŽd love to see what you do with yours!!

IŽll try one to see how it works, thanks!

Thank you. Maybe IŽll try another one in that colour (or a bit lighter).

I was thinking of painting normal troops in lighter colours and officers in spotted skin or something like that but as I said IŽm a bit lost with them. Thank you for your help.

My favourite one is the red one. Although I think it would work best if you used a lighter, more pinkish, tone for the 'flesh'.

Anyway, giving them variation in hue would make for a more interesting looking army. From red tones, to yellowish ones, through orangy and brown-beigy ones.

The idea of using spots to mark officers or elite troops is pretty good.

District 9 was on again tonight (Channel 4), (not that i don't have it on dvd ;)). definately go with a mixed colour scheme, maybe caste structure with the leaders picked out in the same brood colours? and go white orange with the weapons, and dark grey orange. Hope you've got some of those exo-suits, bloody lovely!!

Good luck

Probably the two end ones look most D9 ish, but they need to look more "dirty".
Maybe ok for the officer types as they are.

IŽll probably do that, play with different colours in the same unit.

Yes, I bought a bag of exo-suits, they are great!! IŽm not very convinced about those enormous weapons on the big mecha but I think IŽll take them off because I like the miniature. I should bought the film the last time I was in Chester... maybe the next time...

IŽm trying the prawn one, IŽll tell you how it works.

Very nice work, I like all the schemes. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Personally (being a Trekkie), I would go for squads of them in the three colours (from left to right) that are first, third and fourth in position, giving you the three Starfleet uniform division colours!

Crustie redshirts! ;) :o

I would use a different scheme on every one after seeing waht you've done so far.

To be honest, these have never appealed, even after watching District 9 for the first time a week ago and loving it. Now that I've seen your painted figs they are on my want list.

Chester, next time we visit my wife's mum in Little Sutton I'll let you know, maybe we could meet up at the GW in Chester and laugh at the pj's in the cabinets? ;)

Mechs with big weapons is a given! ;) Add some coms antenna and they'll look awesome black and orange.

I will try it when I can buy one, thanks.

I have painted two more in lighter red colour and orange/flesh tones. But IŽm still not sure about it  >:(, IŽll paint the last one in another colour scheme and then IŽll decide what to do.

I think if you keep going with test paint schemes, by the the time you decide which you like you'll already have an army done and dusted. I'd keep going with the individual colours. The unit is already looking unique and correct.
