Action at Galmanche ( IABSM AARs)
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:37:14 AM »
During the french convention Ecole de Guerre 2012, I umpired several demo games of the scenario Action at Galmanche using IABSM v3.

This looks like 28mm - how did it go?  I currently do IABSM in 15mm but have plans to open a second front in 28mm...

Inspirational stuff here! I've only played IABSM in 15mm and must say, for infantry based games at least, prefer to FOW. Did you amend the rule in anyway to play it with 28mm?

1) About the rules changes, I like the booklet with photos for the examples. It helps the understanding. Small points or issues have been improved of fixed so the game is more easy to learn.

2) For 28mm, I nearly double the distances and ranges. You can find my QRS and Firing table here http://perrysheroes.free.fr/spip.php?article446

3) Finally, here is the last After Action Report of the scenario Action at Galmanche played with IABSM v3. This game lasted about 5 hours and a half (so there are more than 30 photos). It was very intesting game for both players really played the period and not the rules.

Thanks for the 28mm IABSM resources, Olivier, these look very handy indeed.  Interesting that one of your games lasted 5.5 hours - I have found the scenarios in the new rulebook last over 2.5 hours, though I'm a new player so maybe things will speed up!

In response to the question about comparing the old and new IABSM (v2 and v3), the core system is the same but the new rulebook is 100% better in terms of accessibility.  I bought the v2 rules and never got round to playing it; the v3 rules have inspired me to collect an army and I've now managed 4 games already.  Being able to buy the cards also makes life quicker.

I agree with you James, the 'ready-to-use' cards are a very nice addition.

One of the big differences between the V2 and V3 is Shock points and how they are managed. The Shock Points are the old Wounds. Previously the wounds reduce the fighting and moving capacity of a unit. With the Shock points, you can also a section / squad that loses its bottle and retreat when it has too many Shock. It is a very realistic system that reflects the Combat Stress.

Also the Big Men have a initiative level (instead of a dice) so it is easier to understand and play.

Funny though - we implemented this (the shock points instead of wounds) in our games of IABSM immediately after reading about it in the SHarpe Pratice playtest. So that's a welcome change!  lol

I haven't been gaming lard in quite some time though... I'm tempted to have a go at it again now.  ;D
